Joburg Super Kings have finalized a significant restructuring of their technical department ahead of the 2027 SA20 season, headlined by the appointment of South African fast-bowling legend Allan Donald as the new bowling coach. The move marks a transition toward a new coaching era at the Wanderers.

Donald, known globally as “White Lightning,” takes over from Eric Simons, who has parted ways with the team after serving as both assistant and bowling coach. Simons had been a cornerstone of the Super Kings’ broader network, which includes coaching ties to Chennai Super Kings in the IPL and Texas Super Kings in MLC. His departure, alongside long-time physiotherapist Tommy Simsek, signals a shift away from the established staff that helped launch the Johannesburg-based franchise.

A New Leadership Structure

The arrival of Donald is part of a broader reshuffle triggered by the exit of former head coach Stephen Fleming. Fleming vacated his role earlier this year to take up the position of head coach for the England Men’s Test team. In response to his departure, the franchise promoted Albie Morkel to head coach in July 2026, moving the former Proteas all-rounder into the top spot after his previous tenure as an assistant.

To support Morkel and Donald, the Joburg Super Kings have also added Pierre de Bruyn as the new fielding coach. The medical department has also seen changes, with Evan Speechly appointed as the team’s new physiotherapist to fill the vacancy left by Simsek.

Donald’s Coaching Pedigree

Donald brings an extensive coaching resume to the Joburg Super Kings. Since retiring from international cricket as one of South Africa’s most prolific wicket-takers, he has held high-profile coaching roles with the South African national team, Bangladesh, and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL. His appointment is expected to provide a fresh tactical perspective for a JSK bowling unit looking to make a deep run in the fifth edition of the tournament.

The changes come as the franchise prepares for the 2027 SA20 season, which is officially scheduled to run from January 17 to February 21. With the full coaching staff now in place, the team will look to solidify its roster through the upcoming draft cycles to complement the new local leadership at the helm.
