Going into the US Open, Jessica Pegula’s form was a major concern. She had three consecutive second-round defeats on the hard courts after the Wimbledon Championships. Despite being one of the top American players at the US Open, Pegula’s confidence was visibly shaken. However, she came back strongly at Flushing Meadows to make it to the last eight. Earlier today, Pegula defeated her compatriot Ann Li to book her place in the quarterfinals. All of this was possible after a brutal reality check against Aryna Sabalenka.
Before the US Open, Pegula had a practice session with World Number 1 Sabalenka. However, the American star was completely outplayed against Sabalenka, and she described that harrowing experience in an interview today.
Pegula revealed, “I felt terrible coming into this tournament, honestly. I had a practice on Wednesday, and I literally like I think I hit with Sabalenka. She just killed me. I was playing terrible, and then we went out for like a second hour, and I stopped like halfway through the hour and was like I’m done, like this isn’t good. Like, I don’t know why I’m out here practicing.”
This is a developing story…
