Jean-Michel Jarre‘s storied career has solidified him as not only a pioneer of electronic music but someone who has lived long enough to see its evolution from the very beginning. He’s taken that experience and crafted Machines: A History of Electronic Music, a detailed history of the genre he’s helped define.

Set to release on November 24 and be distributed by Thames & Hudson, the book will contain a wealth of personal experience and commentary from Jarre. Using his unique perspective as both an instrument collector and world-renowned musician, Jarre’s insights will detail the earliest days of electronic music and the moments that led to where it’s at now.

Further, Machines will include anecdotes from his time working under Pierre Schaeffer at the Groupe de Recherches Musicales in Paris as well as the histories of the writing process, from tape recordings to the current AI landscape. The book will be a collection of highlights. Breakthrough tracks, technologies, and moments that shaped electronic music are expected to be discussed in detail.

Jarre isn’t doing this entirely on his own, however. He’s tapped a full powerhouse of minds to lend their experience and contribute to the book. Armin van Buuren, Vince Clarke, Gillian Gilbert, Nicolas Godin, Richie Hawtin, Johnny Marr, Gary Numan, Benjamin John Power, and Nick Rhodes will lend their knowledge, making this one of, if not the most, complete histories of electronic music we’ve seen to date.

There are few as well equipped to retell the rich history of electronic music as Jarre. Born in 1948, the French artist first emerged in the 1970s and hit his stride with his third and fourth albums Oxygène and Equinoxe. Since then, he’s remained at the forefront, continuously pioneering in the creative process and performing at landmark destinations like Pompeii and the Dead Sea.
