James Gunn recently responded to an unusual fan query about Superman, revealing unexpected details about Lex Luthor’s pocket universe prison. His answer clarified a long-speculated aspect of the film’s setting.

James Gunn answers Superman’s Pocket Universe prison toilet questions

On Threads, a fan asked, “Are the prisoners in Lex’s pocket universe watching each other go to the bathroom or do they get some privacy?” James Gunn replied, “No privacy. Those things in the back left corners of each cell are toilets.”

The clarification revealed that the corner chairs in the glass cells were actually toilets. When pressed further about the logistics, Gunn elaborated, “Into the bottom of the toilet and there are slots where the waste can be removed (likely by Mr. Handsome, and probably not often). You might think we don’t think about this stuff but we really do.”

Lex Luthor created Mr. Handsome as a boy, introducing the creature as the caretaker of the prison. Gunn has previously explained that “Lex created Mr. Handsome in a Petri dish when he was 12 – he was trying to make a human.” The director’s comments confirm that the character also has a role in maintaining Luthor’s pocket dimension. This includes handling matters as unglamorous as sanitation.

The discussion originated from fan observations that the prison cells in Superman lacked visible bathrooms. With prisoners confined to transparent boxes, questions of privacy and practicality quickly spread online. Gunn’s answers indicate that the lack of privacy was intentional and part of the design of the dimension.

Anticipation builds for Superman’s continuation in Man of Tomorrow, where Lex Luthor will reappear. His fate after the events of the first film saw him taken to Belle Reve, sparking speculation about his crossover into Peacemaker Season 2.

Superman, starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult, is currently streaming on Max. Gunn continues to field fan questions about the DCU’s most unexpected details.
