James Gunn recently picked his winner in a hypothetical fight between Green Lantern and Superman. Gunn introduced Superman and Green Lantern, Guy Gardner, in the Superman movie, which came out in July 2025. With them being two of the strongest characters currently in the new DCU, fans are eager to know who would be the clear winner if they clashed.
James Gunn thinks Green Lantern could beat Superman in a fight
James Gunn said Green Lantern could beat Superman in a fight. The director appeared on Peacemaker: The Official Podcast, where actor Tim Meadows stated that he wanted his character from Peacemaker Season 2, Langston Fleury, to fight Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern.
However, Gunn conveyed that Fleury would lose as Green Lantern had the potential to even beat Superman. “I’m not sure Superman would beat Green Lantern. I definitely don’t think Langston Fleury is going to beat Green Lantern,” Gunn said.
When Jennifer Holland, who plays the role of Emilia Harcourt in Peacemaker, stated that she thinks that Superman would emerge victorious, Gunn said, “He’s Superman, but it’s still a fight. It’s a real fight.”
Although a clash between Gardner and Superman is far from happening in the DCU, fans did witness the tension between the two in the movie. This happens when David Corenswet’s Superman is confronted by Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner about his parents’ message.
While Superman tells him not to provoke him, Gardner further tells him to try attacking him, suggesting that he could take on the Man of Steel. After the release of the movie, fans also debated who would win between the two superpowers. It was later concluded that although Gardner could take down most of his opponents, Superman would probably beat him. Moreover, Gardner has not officially been able to beat Superman in the comics.
