James Gunn recently revealed a major detail about the upcoming Superman spin-off set in the DCU revolving around Jimmy Olsen, played by Skyler Gisondo. As of writing, plot details for the series are being kept under wraps. Moreover, an official release date hasn’t been set. Olsen previously played a major supporting role in the David Corenswet-led film.
Jimmy Olsen’s series won’t be animated
James Gunn recently confirmed that the Jimmy Olsen DCU spin-off series will not be animated.
On Threads, a fan commended the filmmaker’s incorporation of Superman‘s Hypno-Glasses in the movie. They then asked if he could confirm whether Olsen would use the signal watch that the Man of Steel gives him in the comics to summon him in case of emergencies in the spin-off, which they claimed was animated.
Another fan responded, asking when it was ever confirmed that the show would be in that format. Gunn added shortly after, saying, “(It’s not).”However, he did not address the signal watch’s appearance.
The show is untitled as of writing. Previously, as per rumors, it was reportedly titled “DC Crime.” However, Gunn debunked this shortly after on Threads. The Guardians of the Galaxy director said, “Just FYI there has never been a project titled ‘DC Crime’ in development, not even as a working title. I don’t know where that came from but it’s weird.”However, he clarified that other details reported weren’t false.
Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda, known for the award-winning mockumentary American Vandal, are developing it, serving as writers and showrunners. They are also executive producing alongside Gunn and DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran.
The former shared in an interview with The Direct last month that the series has an unannounced title. While he didn’t reveal what it was, he clarified that it wasn’t “Untitled Jimmy Olsen show.”
The story reportedly sees Olsen and other Daily Planet reporters work on cases involving supervillains. Season 1 is expected to follow Gorilla Grodd, who in comics and most media is a notable enemy of The Flash (via The Hollywood Reporter).
