Years before he took the reins of DC Studios, James Gunn tried to bring a fan-favorite superhero to the big screen at Warner Bros. Pictures.

What DC movie did James Gunn almost make?

Taking the time to answer some questions on the social media platform Threads, Gunn responded to a fan who wanted to know if the rumor that he was “gonna do a Plastic Man movie in the early 2000s at WB with Matthew Lillard” was true. The DC Studios head confirmed that the rumor was partially true, clarifying that Lillard and he merely pitched “this idea to Lorenzo DiBonaventura, and he was into it.”

While di Bonaventura is best known these days for producing Paramount’s Transformers franchise in the 1990s, he worked for Warner Bros. and was the studio’s president of worldwide production by the time he left in 2002 to found his own production company.

Gunn and Lillard’s Plastic Man pitch is one of the many failed attempts to bring the stretchy superhero to the big screen. The Wachowskis, the filmmaking duo best known for The Matrix, were also known to have written a screenplay for a Plastic Man movie in the mid-1990s, which never went anywhere.

However, things might finally be looking up for Plastic Man now that Gunn is co-CEO of DC Studios. Back in February 2024 on Threads, Gunn addressed a DC Universe rumor claiming that there would be an open casting call for Ruthye in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and that movies based on Teen Titans, Sgt. Rock, and Plastic Man were in development, the latter of which would also be directed by Darren Aronofsky, stating that “AT LEAST one of those things is not true. Have fun guessing!”

In the almost two years since that post, DC Studios has cast Ruthye and confirmed that it is making Teen Titans and Sgt. Rock movies, meaning that a Plastic Man movie is likely not on the horizon, despite several actors like Ben Schwartz and Rainn Wilson revealing their interest in playing the role. However, there is a slight possibility that Aronofsky’s involvement in the movie is what Gunn was deeming false, but until a Plastic Man movie is officially announced by DC, fans won’t know for sure what the studio has planned for the fan-favorite superhero.
