J.J. Abrams' admiration for Steven Spielberg is well known; before they worked together on the sci-fi movie Super 8, Abrams apprenticed for Spielberg as a teenager. However, the overtly Spielbergian Super 8 wasn't the first time that Abrams paid tribute to his mentor. Around a decade earlier, when Abrams was working as a writer-for-hire, he co-authored a gritty thriller directly influenced by Spielberg's first-ever studio-produced feature film, Duel. The 1971 TV movie follows a traveling salesman who is harassed on the highway by the driver of a semi-truck. Abrams' 2001 movie, which he also co-produced, follows a trio of friends who are stalked by a psychopathic trucker after their prank goes awry.
