Chamkila has earned Indian singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh a nomination for Best Actor in the 2025 International Emmys. Dosanjh portrays the character of well-known Punjabi poet-singer Amar Singh Chamkila, who gained recognition and fame due to his flamboyant personality and sexually suggestive songs that offended a lot of people. In 1988, Chamkila, his second wife, and two other members of his musical group were all killed.

Chamkila shines as India's lone Emmy nod

On Thursday, the International Emmys announced the nominations on their Instagram account. The 53rd International Emmy Awards event, which is set for November 24 in New York City, will announce the winners. The sole Indian submission for this year's coveted awards is Chamkila, which was produced by Window Seat Films and premiered on streaming platform Netflix last year.

Dosanjh will compete against Diego Vasquez for One Hundred Years of Solitude (Colombia), Oriol Pla for Yo, adicto (Spain), and David Mitchell for Ludwig (United Kingdom) for the Best Actor award.

Sardaar Ji 3 controversy

Dosanjh has achieved success in Bollywood and is well-known for his Punjabi songs. His recent film Sardaar Ji 3, which stars Pakistani actress Haniya Aamir, caused considerable controversy.

The movie was supposed to be released earlier this year, but due of Operation Sindoor- India's military response to the terror assaults in Pahalgam- distribution problems occurred. Although the film's distribution was halted in India, it was able to be released in theatres abroad.

Dosanjh has insisted that the movie was filmed long before the two nations' war started. In reference to the present Asia Cup, he recently also brought attention to the fact that India and Pakistan are still playing cricket.

How fans reacted to his nomination?

Fans celebrated the announcement as soon as it was made. One wrote, "Talent always makes its way, despite political conspiracies in the path!"

Another wrote, "Credit where he deserves, chamkilaa was a great act by Diljit."
