Billy Napier couldn’t get a better savior than DJ Lagway to make up for his lackluster schedule. But it’s not just him; as Lagway revealed, a chunk of brickbats that got under the head coach’s skin was the real game changer. Remember when the Gators came down to a dozy 41-17 loss to Miami in an early-season slump! Instead of a good start to a brand new chance to dodge the 5-7 curse, the Gators got to taste a brutal heartbreak from rival Miami. However, he managed to rally the latter part of the season behind DJ Lagway after a few more devastating losses along the way. The last four-game win streak felt like a solace to the rough beatdowns. Lagway has every reason to catch the hype of the breakout star in 2035, but it comes with a slight grain of salt.
Napier might have ended his season with a smile on his face, going 8-5 with a Bowl win. But the deep-seated fear of the past keeps coming back. His reckless playcalling and high-risk decisions continue to choke him. Napier’s Year 4 oozes out a mixed bag vibe; while there’s some optimism, mostly, the base is fragile. Especially if you have watched the Gators play in their prime, like in the quintessential Spurrier and Meyer eras, you can never call it a silver lining. Fans know what the elite Gators look like, so they don’t have the archetype to bear with mediocrity for long, no matter how promising Lagway looks.
“I think there’s more of a nod for me to DJ Lagway, you’re right. Napier scares me. Because Billy Napier had some real bonehead moments mid-season, “ ROC Boys football host Dylan dished the reality. “DJ Lagway, though, felt different. I almost felt like when he was on the field, there was like a different confidence. A different level of play that they took to, and I, again, that’s the most important position in the sport of football.”
Dylan quickly shifted his focus to the lone bright spot of the Gators and added some weight. “I think he is arguably a top-three player.” And his co-host added, “I agree, and if you get that from DJ Lagway, that this team is so dangerous.”
Lagway has the juice to revitalize a doomsday team. He has done that before. He can do it with more precision and diligence again. It’s not just about the stat. The way Lagway gives a hard time to a menacing defender and delivers his passes with insane speed and grip is sensational. It’s fun to watch. But the only recurring concern looks to be his health.
DJ Lagway’s uncertain availability raises concern for the Gators
If Lagway is healthy, you can still bet a dime. Now, he missed the spring game dealing to a long-standing shoulder injury. The injury initially demanded surgery, but the later developments suggested he can throw within a few weeks without needing any surgery. The shoulder issue has reportedly been troubling him since high school. So, a permanent diagnosis and cure are the primary focus.
He is doing well, making slow but steady progress in his healing. While recent videos of indoor practice surfaced, the fact that he still hasn’t shown up full-fledged on the field is a growing discomfort for all Gators fans. After all, the Gators QB threw for 1915 yards and made 12 TDs even during his injury-plagued season. Now, On3’s JD PicKell, who ranked the Gators at No. 10 in his post-spring top 25 ranking, has also voiced doubt about their poster boy.
If Lagway’s not returning fit after his rehab, Billy Napier and the team might have to pay the price. “I think DJ Lagway should be healthy, which has been a hot topic around this office. Should he be healthy? I think Florida is one of those top 15 teams in college football. I really do.” We will see when Lagway makes the most anticipated comeback and sets the Florida lineups on fire.
