These are some tough times for Indiana Fever fans. From that heartbreaking loss to the Liberty on the final play to the tough news about Caitlin Clark’s injury–it’s been one blow after another. Clark, who has never missed a game since she started her college career, will sit out for the first time in 183 straight appearances. She’s always been the kind of player who suits up no matter what, so this one stings. But hey, it’s not all doom and gloom. There’s finally a bit of good news coming the Fever’s way.

Caitlin Clark will be sidelined for the next two weeks after picking up a strain in her left quadriceps. The team confirmed the news on Monday and made it clear that this injury isn’t linked to the quad tightness she dealt with during the preseason, which had kept her out of the Mystics game. So, while it’s the same leg, this is a fresh setback for the Fever star. But WNBA content creator Rosaline Lee has some news that might cheer up Indiana.

On her From The Logo show, Lee shared her thoughts on Clark’s injury and how serious it might be. “I think what is so dark about this is that Caitlin Clark will definitely be missing a lot of basketball in a short WNBA season,” she said. “Obviously, the best thing to do is to rest her so that when she does come back, she is fully healed and the injury can’t get worse. Though it is hard to measure when these types of injuries are better, I will say having a quadricep injury is much better than having like a calf injury or a hamstring injury.”

And she’s absolutely right! According to the National Library of Medicine, hamstring injuries are classified into three grades:

Grade 1 – a mild pull or strain Grade 2 – a partial muscle tear Grade 3 – a complete muscle tear

A Grade 1 hamstring strain can heal in just a few days, but Grades 2 and 3 can take several weeks or even months to fully recover. In some severe cases, surgery might even be needed. So while it’s still frustrating for Clark to miss time with a grade 1 quad injury, it could’ve been much worse. Call it a lucky break, given the Iowa native was having a difficult time getting those threes in. For the first time since 2022, she went scoreless from beyond the arc in game 3 and sunk just 2 against the Liberty.

But that wasn’t the only silver lining Lee shared. Speaking about the timing of Clark’s injury, she said, “The only bright side to the timing is the timing of the injury because their schedule up until June 14th is pretty light.”

The Fever’s upcoming schedule might just be a blessing in disguise. First up, they face the Mystics on May 28–a team in rebuild mode. Sure, Washington have exciting young talents like Kiki Iriafen and Sonia Citron, but they’re also riding on a three-game losing streak. Then comes a May 30 showdown with the Connecticut Sun, another team still searching for its first win of the season and also deep in the rebuilding phase.

On June 3, it’s another clash with the Mystics, and then comes the June 7 rematch with the Chicago Sky–a team the Fever just crushed by 35 points in their season opener. The Sky are still winless as well. So yeah, it’s safe to say the basketball gods might just be smiling down on Indiana right now. While Clark sharpens her skills from the sidelines, it will be a good opportunity for the rest to get in the minutes and work in a system to not completely rely on their star player.

Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, who made quite the impression in her preseason debut against the Mystics, isn’t shying away from stepping up in Caitlin Clark’s absence. She recently weighed in on the injury news.

Indiana Fever see an upside to Caitlin Clark’s injury

Sophie Cunningham may have missed the first couple of games this season, but when she finally hit the court, she wasted no time making an impact. In her debut against the Atlanta Dream, she logged 20 minutes and chipped in with 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists–helping the Fever secure the win. And now, with Caitlin Clark sidelined, Sophie has broken her silence on the injury.

“Again, I think it’s a great opportunity for us,” Cunningham said. “Clearly, we want her out there. I think she draws so much attention, and she’s a phenomenal, phenomenal player. But at the same time, I think it’s a great time for her to learn from the sidelines.” Coach White also had a similar thing to say about the Clark’s injury– highlighting how this injury could help the player learn more about the game from the touchline and think like a coach.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to learn offense,” Cunningham added. “Move the ball, pass, cut. We just can’t stand and watch anymore. I think it’s going to be good for us to actually get into our action. And defensively, for us to take another jump.”

All eyes will be on how the Indiana Fever adapt without their superstar floor general. Early reports hint that veteran Sydney Colson could step in to take over backcourt duties in Clark’s absence. But this also opens the door for players like Sophie Cunningham and Lexie Hull–both of whom have been exceptional this season.
