The Indiana Fever retooled heavily in the offseason with only five players returning. Sure, the buzz is all about the generational star they have – Caitlin Clark leading the charge – but they’re not just chasing the crowd, they’re chasing that ultimate crown. And while we can see all the new fixes now, don’t forget where it all started from: new head coach Stephanie White. She walked in, took one look at the gaps, and basically said, “This ain’t it. Let’s fix it!” Brutally honest, refreshingly direct and exactly what this team needed.
In the preseason, Coach White didn’t stick to one starting five. She tested out different lineups in each of the Fever’s three games. They won all three. Clean sweep. That just shows how deep this squad is. But if we wanna go ABC and really break down why this big shift happened, the answer’s pretty simple: defense.
Statistically, Indiana’s defense last season was rough. They gave up 87.7 points per game, ranked 11th out of 12 teams, and let opponents shoot 44.1% from the field and 36.1% from deep. So what did the Fever do? They went full “enough is enough” mode. The mission for 2025 was crystal clear: add some defense.
That’s exactly what Coach White has been drilling into her squad from Day 1. WNBA analyst Rosaline Lee even said how coach gave reality check, “I love that Steph White has them kind of like bringing them down to earth with like hey think about defense basically.” How could she not? White’s whole coaching playbook is built on defensive dominance. Back when she coached the Connecticut Sun, they ranked first and second in Defensive Rating during her two-year stint. Defense isn’t just strategy for her, it’s philosophy. The same mindset she’s bringing to this revamped Fever team.

A big part of that shift is thanks to the veterans they scooped up during the offseason. DeWanna Bonner, Natasha Howard, and Sydney Colson – absolute defensive anchors and vocal leaders who know how to win. Bonner even said it best: “I’m a competitor, so I’m going to make them compete…on defense. We’ll make it fun.”
With these veterans setting the tone, the bar for effort and intensity just shot through the roof. Even the WNBA Draft screamed “defense-first.” Coach White wasn’t cryptic about it either. During the draft, she said loud and clear, “The most important thing for us was defensive versatility.” Enter Makayla Timpson, the rookie who made the final roster. She’s a rim-protecting force with serious chops – three-time ACC All-Defensive honoree and an average of 3.1 blocks per game last season, which ranked third in all of D-I. Fever GM Amber Cox didn’t hold back either, calling her a “defensive powerhouse.” No exaggeration there.
But defense isn’t the only thing that’s clicking. You know what else? The vibes inside that locker room are off the charts. Lee said it herself, “I love this team this year the general vibes are like on another level.” Whether it’s their sideline antics, their off-court banter, or the social media challenge videos, they act like they’ve been hooping together for a decade. The chemistry is loud and proud.
So with ‘defense’ and ‘chemistry’ both cooking hot, it’s no surprise the Fever are sitting pretty in the Top 4 of The Athletic’s preseason rankings.
Caitlin Clark’s Fever land top 4 spot in preseason rankings
The 2025 WNBA season tips off this week, and all 13 teams are hitting the court for opening weekend. The Athletic just dropped their power rankings, and even though the New York Liberty opened preseason with a loss, they still snagged the No. 1 spot. Behind them is Minnesota Lynx and the Las Vegas Aces. And then Indiana Fever at No. 4.
The Fever had the best offense in the league post-All-Star break last year. But the defense is where they lacked. And that was with them usually setting their defense after scoring. So the scoring wasn’t the problem, it was what happened on the other end. If Indiana’s dreaming about real title hopes, they need that defense to crack into the top six. History agrees. The 2019 Mystics and 2022 Aces both had historically great offenses and sixth-ranked defenses. That’s a blueprint the Fever are definitely eyeing. Now, offensively, this team has even more mouths to feed in 2025.
Last year’s bread-and-butter was the Clark and Aliyah Boston pick-and-roll, with Kelsey Mitchell floating off-ball. But now, DeWanna Bonner and Natasha Howard are gonna want their touches too. Plus, Lexie Hull, who was a walking flamethrower in the second half of last season, is gonna need her minutes.

It’s a good problem to have, sure, but still a tricky one for coach White. Fever kick off their season against none other than the Chicago Sky, a team they went toe-to-toe with all through 2024, thanks in part to the Clark vs. Angel Reese dynamic. That tension is still very much alive. While Clark sat out the first preseason game, she’s not listed on the injury report, so expect her to suit up. Sophie Cunningham, though, is a game-time decision.
Sothe new-look Indiana Fever is here. They’ve got the star power, the locker room vibes, the upgraded defense, and now a target on their back. Let’s see how this one plays out. If things go according to Coach White’s plan, we might just be watching the start of something really special.
