Illumination, the animation studio behind the “Super Mario” and “Despicable Me” movie franchises, has finally confirmed two three-quels are on the way.
Ahead of “Minions & Monsters” hitting screens next week, Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri has confirmed to Collider that both “Sing 3” and “The Secret Life of Pets 3” are in development at the company.
Speaking with the outlet, he says the studio has been developing a third “The Secret Life of Pets” film for a while, saying “it took us a while to come back to Pets, waiting for an idea that we felt really would earn its place.”
They did though, and he confirms Chris Renaud will return to direct. As for where the project stands, he says: “We are well underway, working hard on an idea that I’m hoping that we’ll make soon.”
As for the third “Sing” film, it continues to progress at the studio. Writer-director Garth Jennings will return to lead creative development on the film and “is focusing all of his energy right now with the team at Illumination.” He says the movie will introduce “some entirely new ideas into the story”.
Speaking of the two projects overall in the company’s slate, he says:
“These are clearly two movies that not only do I love, but the filmmakers love them. Both Sing and Pets are getting a tremendous amount of attention inside the studio. I expect we’ll have some announcements to make about both of them relatively soon.”
He also indicates the studio currently has its slate mapped out through 2030.
