Anthony Bourdain was one of the most influential cultural critics of the 21st century, and there has understandably been a great deal of trepidation whenever the notion of a biopic is presented. Bourdain was on camera for such a significant portion of his career that audiences may have trouble accepting anyone else capturing his mannerisms. Additionally, the controversies regarding Bourdain’s activities towards the end of his life would generate unwanted bad press, particularly in the aftermath of the divisive response to the documentary Roadrunner. However, A24’s upcoming biopic Tony has the potential to explore a fascinating period in Bourdain’s life when he was still discovering the type of artist, writer, and global citizen that he wanted to be.
