While Pixar's Toy Story 5 delivered the biggest opening-weekend box-office haul of 2026, A24's attempt at counter-programming fell flat with an unconventional new Hugh Jackman vehicle. The Australian star is coming off three diverse hits in a row — the superhero satire Deadpool & Wolverine, the music biopic Song Sung Blue, and the recent mystery comedy The Sheep Detectives. A24, on the other hand, recently delivered its biggest-ever hit with the horror blockbuster Backrooms, whose global box-office haul currently stands at $277 million. However, both the arthouse studio and Jackman were in for a setback this weekend.
