Hugh Jackman’s latest film just hit a box office low he hasn’t seen in half a decade. The star’s new period drama struggled to find an audience during a fiercely competitive opening weekend.

The Death of Robin Hood fails to make a mark at box office despite low budget

A24’s The Death of Robin Hood opened at No. 9 at the domestic box office with just $2.6 million, Deadline reported. The Michael Sarnoski-directed film stars Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer. It played in 1,762 theaters during its opening weekend.

The R-rated period drama earned a per-screen average of just $631 on its opening Friday. Saturday saw a 23.7% drop, bringing in $848,232 across the same theater count. Sunday continued the downward trend with $661,621, marking a further 22% decline.

The film faced stiff competition from major wide releases during its debut weekend. Disney Pixar’s Toy Story 5 dominated with a projected $140 million domestic opening across 4,425 theaters. Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day also held strong in its second weekend with around $20 million.

The Death of Robin Hood now marks Hugh Jackman’s lowest wide-release debut in five years. His 2021 sci-fi film Reminiscence previously held that distinction with a $1.9 million opening. Jackman’s recent The Sheep Detectives fared considerably better with a $15.1 million domestic debut earlier in 2026.

The film carries a reported production budget of $20 million, placing its estimated break-even point near $45 million. A24 acquired domestic distribution rights for around $4 million. Critical reception sits at 70% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, while audience response remains lukewarm at 64% on the Popcornmeter.

The film also received a C+ CinemaScore from opening-weekend audiences. Sarnoski shot the production on 35mm film in Northern Ireland, taking advantage of the region’s 30%-40% film tax credits. Reaching profitability through theatrical revenue alone appears increasingly unlikely for the Hugh Jackman-led drama.
