Save Money And Make Homemade Oat Milk

For the longest time, we’ve been purchasing oat milk on sale from Costco, Amazon, or the grocery store.

At Walmart, for example, Earth’s Own Oat Zero Sugar Original 1.75L, 0 Sugar Gluten-free Dairy-free costs $4.47.

How much does it cost to make homemade oat milk? Less than one dollar!

It wasn’t until recently that I discovered how easy it was to make oat milk that I quit buying it.

We were already buying bulk bags of large organic flake oats from Costco, and the only other ingredient needed was water.

If you prefer sweetened oat milk, add pure vanilla extract, cocoa powder, sugar, or syrups such as Torani, Jordan’s, or Matteo’s.

How To Use A Nut Milk Bag

How To Strain Homemade Oat MilkHow To Strain Homemade Oat Milk

Pour the mixture into a nut bag after blending the cold water and oats in the blender.

Ensure the nut bag is placed in a large 4-cup measuring glass to strain the oat milk immediately.

I don’t like to force the oat milk out of the nut bag until closer to the end.

I’m trying to avoid causing a thick, starchy liquid, so once it’s half-strained, I pick the nut bag up and begin squeezing it lightly.

Wear gloves when squeezing the oat milk from the nut bag to keep it hygienic.

From start to finish, it should take about 15-20 mins to drain the oat milk from the bag into the measuring cup.

Once completed, you’ll be left with what looks like oatmeal in the nut bag. Do not throw this out.

We use the leftover oats in protein smoothies or to make cold oats for breakfast.

How To Avoid Slimy Oat Milk

I’ve made many jars of oat milk over the past few months to test theories.

Through research, I’ve learned that if you keep the oats cold, they will not become slimy.

While testing my oat milk recipe, I put the mixture in the freezer and refrigerator before blending.

Although both were successful, the freezer method isn’t needed.

Soak the oats in the refrigerator covered in one cup of water until cold for about 15-20 mins or overnight.

Add the cold oats and the water into a blender and another three cups of cold refrigerator water.

Blend the oat mixture on high for 45 seconds (no more, no less) and pour it into the nut bag to drain.

Once completely drained, pour the nut milk into a wide-mouth 64-ounce Mason jar.

If you blend the oat milk any longer, it will heat up and become gummy and starchy.

The process of keeping the oats cold has successfully eliminated any problems.

Shake Before Drinking The Oat Milk

I noticed that the water and oats would separate in the mason jar if we didn’t use the oat milk daily.

Always shake the mason jar before using, which is a standard message most drinks have on their packaging.

The longest a jar of homemade oat milk lasted in our refrigerator was one week.

Above this, I don’t know if and when it goes off as we go through it quickly, making Cold Brew Salted Caramel Proffee.
