Warning: spoilers ahead for The Last of Us season 2 episode 2.
The latest instalment of The Last of Us has left fans heartbroken beyond repair, after a major character was killed in a brutal way.
But that moment has also begged the question of how much they’re going to feature in future episodes, despite the huge role that they play in the dystopian show.
In season 2 episode 2, Joel (Pedro Pascal) crosses paths with Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), who vowed five years earlier that she could find and kill him for murdering her unarmed father, as well as several members of the Fireflies militia group.
Abby does just that, but she makes Joel suffer first – shooting him in the leg to incapacitate him, and then beating him to a pulp using a golf club.
She finally delivers the killing blow by stabbing Joel in the neck with the broken golf club as Ellie (Bella Ramsey), his surrogate daughter, watches on helplessly.
Given Joel has now died in the story, some fans might be wondering whether they’ll see Pedro again in the second season. Here’s what you need to know.
How much is Pedro Pascal in The Last of Us season 2?

While Joel might have met a grisly end on The Last of Us, this doesn’t necessarily spell the absolute end for his appearances in the second season.
In the trailer for the latest episodes, short snippets of scenes featuring Joel and Ellie were shown, indicating that there is more of their story that viewers are yet to see.
On top of that, showrunner Craig Mazin confirmed in an interview that Pedro, 50, is not gone for good.
Discussing Joel and Ellie’s relationship, he told TVLine: ‘Season one, it’s a beautiful relationship and a wonderful journey. But in its own way, it’s very simple.
‘And this one is way more complicated — and, in its conclusion, just very resonant. It gives you a lot to think about and also has a beautiful note of hope running through it.’
He then added cryptically: ‘So, on behalf of all the Bella-and-Pedro stans out there, I’m here to say: Yes. A good amount is heading your way.’
When do The Last of Us episodes come out?

The Last of Us episodes come out every week in the UK on Mondays.
The episodes are available to watch from 2am on Sky and NOW, and also are shown at 9pm on Mondays on Sky Atlantic.
In the US, the series airs on HBO and Max from 6pm PT (Pacific Time) and from 9pm ET (Eastern Time).
The first episode of season two aired on Monday April 14, and they’ll be shown weekly until the episode nine finale on Monday May 26.
Then after that, it has been confirmed that The Last of Us will be returning for a third outing.
How did The Last of Us season 1 end?
Throughout the first season of The Last of Us, Joel is on a mission – to smuggle Ellie across the US to a Fireflies base, so that they can use her to find a cure, given her rare immunity to the Cordyceps infection.
Joel achieves that aim, getting Ellie to Marlene (Merle Dandridge), a commander of the militia group.
However, when he finds out that Ellie must die in order for the doctors to attempt to create a cure, he refuses to let that happen.
Joel storms through the hospital, killing every Firefly who gets in his way, and shooting the doctor who was going to operate on Ellie in the head.
When Ellie comes to – as she was unconscious during Joel’s killing spree – he tells her that the hospital was attacked by raiders.
While it appears that she doubts what he’s told her, she decides to trust his word, and they had back to Jackson, Wyoming, the community where Joel’s brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna) now lives.
The Last of Us is available to watch on Sky Atlantic and NOW, with new episodes released on Mondays.
