How Carrie Fisher Helped Aaron Sorkin Stay Sober After Drug Addiction

Aaron Sorkin says Carrie Fisher helped him get sober after he feared that drug addiction threatened his writing career. The writer-director recalled the unexpected call in a recent interview.

Speaking to The New York Times, Sorkin said getting sober was frightening because his livelihood and addiction had become closely connected. He shared, “I got a phone call out of the blue from someone I’d never met or spoken to, Carrie Fisher. I’d become friends with Warren Beatty. He has a gravitational pull, and people come into his orbit. And I began to be one of the people in his orbit. I got a phone call from Carrie Fisher because Warren told her to call me. And she said, “I know you think you can’t write without it, and I’m telling you, you’re going to write better than you’ve ever written before.” So I went to rehab.”

He added, “And when I got out, my big fear was relapsing — you’re always terrified of relapsing — and going through the ‘trying to have an idea’ phase again, and that I was going to get frustrated and think, ‘I know the secret, I know how to get past this, I know the phone number to use.’ So at the beginning, I just took uncredited dialogue polish, like two weeks on a Jerry Bruckheimer movie, to get back in the groove of it.”

Aaron Sorkin now has a new movie coming out in a couple of weeks

Aaron Sorkin returns with The Social Reckoning, his latest feature as writer-director. Distributed by Sony Pictures, the film arrives in U.S. theaters on October 9, 2026.

The story centers on Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen and journalist Jeff Horwitz. Mikey Madison plays Haugen, while Jeremy Allen White portrays Horwitz. Jeremy Strong plays Mark Zuckerberg. The new film brings Sorkin back to the Facebook story more than a decade later.

The Social Reckoning follows Sorkin’s 2010 film The Social Network, which explored Facebook’s origins. This new film shifts attention toward the company’s later impact and the events surrounding its internal decisions.
