House of the Dragon Season 3 wastes no time raising the stakes with its brutal premiere episode. The long-awaited Battle of the Gullet claims several fan-favorite characters in a bloody naval confrontation.
House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 1 kills off three big names at explosive sea battle
The Battle of the Gullet claims the following major characters:
Jacaerys Velaryon, killed by three arrows after losing his dragon Vermax at sea Vermax, Jacaerys’ dragon, drowns after a harpoon drags him beneath the surface Admiral Sharako Lohar, fatally stabbed by Alyn of Hull during close combat Jason Lannister, beheaded by Roddy the Ruin before the sea battle beginsJace defies his mother and takes flight on Vermax to protect the Velaryon fleet from Triarchy forces. Baela joins him on Moondancer, and the two dragons initially turn the tide of battle. A harpoon weapon eventually pulls Vermax underwater, and Jace manages to surface on floating debris. An unseen archer then puts three arrows into Rhaenyra’s eldest son, ending his life.
Lohar commands the Triarchy fleet driven by a deep hatred for Lord Corlys Velaryon, specifically. She manages to board the Sea Snake’s flagship after navigating his trap in the Dragonstone pass. Alyn of Hull confronts Lohar in the sinking lower decks and kills her with a blade to the neck.
Roddy the Ruin delivers Jason Lannister’s head to Daemon after the Winter Wolves intercept fleeing Lannister forces. This happens away from the main naval battle, confirming the Stark-allied Northmen have finally arrived.
The episode also leaves Tyland Lannister’s fate hanging in the balance. Lohar throws him overboard wearing heavy armor, which likely drags him beneath the waves. The show does not confirm his death, leaving room for a possible return in future episodes. In Fire and Blood, Tyland never participates in the Battle of the Gullet and instead dies years later from Winter Fever. So, anything is possible as far as his future is confirmed.
Lord Corlys Velaryon’s fate is equally uncertain after he falls into the sea during his duel with Lohar. The show does not confirm whether the Sea Snake survives the battle. In Fire and Blood, Corlys survives the Gullet and goes on to serve as Hand of the Queen and later as a regent for King Aegon III. He eventually dies of old age at seventy-nine in 132 AC.
The premiere also replaces the book character Nettles by giving Rhaena the Sheepstealer storyline. Nettles originally claims Sheepstealer in the source material and develops a complex bond with Daemon. In the book, Rhaenyra brands Nettles a traitor at Mysaria’s urging and orders her death, though Nettles escapes and survives the war.
Rhaena now inherits this arc, but Sheepstealer proves dangerously uncontrollable during the Gullet. The wild dragon attacks allied forces and contributes directly to Jace’s death. The episode also leaves Lord Corlys Velaryon’s fate uncertain after he falls into the sea during the battle.
House of the Dragon season 3, episode 2 airs Sunday, June 28, at 9:00 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max.
