Horror movie fans can breathe a huge sigh of relief as the first trailer for the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot has dropped, and it’s predictably terrifying.

Last year, it was confirmed that the iconic film, which was released in 1997, would be getting the revival treatment nearly 30 years later.

Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr, who starred as Julie James and Ray Bronson in the original alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe, later announced they would be reprising their roles for the new slasher.

They have joined Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers, Sarah Pidgeon, Billy Campbell and Gabbriette Bechtel for the new outing, which will be released in cinemas on July 18.

Ahead of the premiere, a new teaser shows a new group of Southport locals being terrorized by the murderer, who attacks one unsuspecting youngster with a harpoon.

‘Do you think this is some kind of karma for what we did?,’ Madelyn’s character questions, as she is plagued with a card with the cryptic message: ‘I know what you did last summer.’

Attending a town meeting, Ray urges the police to take the killing seriously, begging: ‘You need to handle this. This isn’t the first time there’s been violence like this in Southport.

‘It’s not going to stop.’

In a flash after Ray’s appearance, the cameras panned over Helen Shivers’ (Sarah Michelle Gellar) grave, showing how much carnage the killer had caused before.

As they are hunted by the killer, the group turns to Julie for help, who simply responds: ‘I just have one question… What did you do last summer?’

Thankfully, we don’t have to wait long to be terrified out of our minds, as the flick will be released in cinemas in just a few months.

Fans were sent into a spin with the two-minute clip, and flocked to social media to unpack Jennifer and Freddie returning to the franchise.

YouTube user Thedestroyer2alltrolls411 cheered: ‘I got chills when I saw Julie James. I love Jennifer Love Hewitt! She is so amazing! The first movie was so underrated.’

‘Thats how u do a remake sequel. bring at least couple actors from previous movie, also that “I got one question for u…..WHAT U DID LAST SUMMER? reveal was awesome [sic],’ Uncannykenny agreed.

Cpl.barbarush4814 commented: ‘That harpoon attack was freaking brutal. It’s really good to see this movie series make a return after the disaster it was “I always will know what you did last summer”.’

Viewers were also thrilled – and a little emotional – at the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it tribute to Helen, after her unforgettable death in the first movie.

KrasimirLambov penned: ‘I’ve been a fan of the original I Know What You Did Last Summer since 1997. I’m beyond happy that Julie and Ray are returning in the new movie!

‘And the fact that they at least mention Helen Shivers – even just with a photo – truly warmed my heart. That’s real nostalgia! I can’t wait to see it. Hoping for a strong return to the roots!’

The original 90s slasher followed a group of teenagers in a small town accidentally killing a man and covering it up – before being hunted by a serial killer on the anniversary of the attack.

Julie and Ray jetted out to the Bahamas for the 1998 sequel, titled I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, where they went up against the murderer once again.

While Sarah confirmed that she will not be reprising her role in the reboot– despite pleading from many – director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson teased that there are a bunch of nods for fans of the original.

She told People Magazine that the team ‘approached it like super fans, so I think people are going to be really happy.

‘We have one really, really fantastic nod to I Still Know What You Did Last Summer that people are going to love.

‘All the things that you want to see in this movie, you’re going to see in this movie.’

‘It is not a serious movie. It is a really fun, popcorn summer event,’ she added, promising that the horror aspect is ‘ratcheted up to a hundred in this — it’s much more brutal.

‘There’s definitely more methodology to every kill in this movie, unlike the first, which is kind of just him stalking them and going after them.

‘There’s not a lot of gore or blood or violence in the first one. There certainly is in this one.’

I Know What You Did Last Summer is in cinemas on July 18.
