Julie Plec, who developed The Vampire Diaries with Kevin Williamson, has revealed why a crossover with another CW show, Supernatural, didn’t happen in Samantha Highfill’s new book, I Was Feeling Epic: An Oral History of The Vampire Diaries. The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural were on TV around the same time and dealt with similar fantasy concepts and themes.
Julie Plec on why The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural never had a crossover
Julie Plec revealed in I Was Feeling Epic: An Oral History of The Vampire Diaries that the network spoke to them after their show’s debut about a potential collaboration with Supernatural creators.
However, Plec and her team declined as they felt that combining the two worlds would not work. She added that their answer would have been opposite if that offer had been made a few years down the line. “By the way, if that same request had come my way in Season 7, I would’ve been like, ‘F— yeah,’” she noted in the book (via TV Insider).
This isn’t the first time that Alec has discussed why they turned down the prospect of a crossover with Supernatural. She even gave details on why she and Williamson were against the idea.
“Kevin and I were like ‘absolutely not, because we are vampires and werewolves. We don’t have demons. We don’t have Hell. We don’t have the devil. We don’t have any of that stuff! It’s like two completely different supernatural universes,'” Alec said at a promotional Q&A in 2018 (via KSiteTV).
Notably, Supernatural stars Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins have also speculated on the prospects of a crossover between the two shows in the past.
The Vampire Diaries aired on The CW for eight seasons from September 10, 2009, to March 10, 2017. Meanwhile, the first season of Supernatural debuted on The WB on September 13, 2005. Its remaining 14 seasons subsequently aired on the CW, with the series concluding on November 19, 2020.
