Lauren S. Hissrich, the creator and showrunner of the hit Netflix series The Witcher, explained in a new interview why Henry Cavill left the show in 2022. The Man of Steel actor portrayed Geralt of Rivia in the first three seasons of The Witcher. After his exit, Liam Hemsworth joined the cast as Geralt.

Lauren Hissrich reveals why Henry Cavill wanted to leave The Witcher

Hissrich disclosed in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly that talks about Cavill’s exit had been going around “for a while” before it actually happened. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare star reportedly wanted to leave the show himself. In 2022, there were speculations that Cavill’s departure was due to creative differences, a phrase that Hissrich accepted can mean a lot of things.

“He (Cavill) had plans for other roles that he really wanted to commit himself to,” Hissrich recalled. “And for us, you don’t want to hold someone and force them to be doing something that they don’t want to do. I think that’s why it felt like a really symbiotic decision,” she added.

While Hissrich seemingly didn’t mention what those “other roles” could be, one of them presumably was Clark Kent / Superman. A few days before Cavill announced his exit from The Witcher on Instagram, he discussed his return as the iconic superhero in future DCEU projects. Ultimately, that didn’t happen. The franchise underwent a soft reboot, and the role of Superman was recast with David Corenswet. Cavill has since started working on the Warhammer 40,000 TV series and a new Highlander movie.

As things stand, The Witcher will conclude after a fifth and final season. The series is an adaptation of novels and short stories by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. In the above-mentioned interview, Hissrich made it clear that there was no conversation about ending the show after Cavill’s exit. “The show is bigger than one actor,” she elaborated. “It’s bigger than me. There’s a book series, there’s a video game. We are the third entry into this. So The Witcher lives whether or not we go.”

The Witcher Season 4 comes out on Netflix on October 30, 2025.
