Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered commanders across the U.S. military to conduct a one-day voting stand-down by October 15

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has ordered military commanders across the country to set aside an entire day for America’s service members to register, obtain absentee ballots and cast their votes ahead of the November midterm elections.

On Friday, Secretary Hegseth ordered commanders across the Department of Defense to designate a mandatory, one-day military “stand-down” prior to October 15.

The order is designed to give service members and their families the necessary time to register to vote, request absentee ballots, and cast their votes ahead of the crucial upcoming midterm elections.

In a video statement posted on X, Hegseth explained that voting for military personnel has been “time-consuming and complex,” as service members face unnecessary difficulties obtaining and returning absentee ballots while serving far from home.

Sec. Hegseth:
“So, we all agree that voting is important, number one. We all agree that, at the War Department, we serve the best citizens in the country—those who wear the uniform—number two. So, how about we make sure those who serve our country have every single opportunity to vote? Makes sense to me.

Therefore, I’m directing all commanders and supervisors at all levels across this department to conduct a one-day stand-down during the month of October, beginning this year and continuing every election year.

This year, we’ll execute the stand-down no later than October 15th. You see, there’s plenty of precedence for this. In fact, in February of 2021, under the Biden administration, then-Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin mandated an urgent training stand-down. He paused training operations and exercises to address a vaguely defined but urgent extremism problem. I remember it—patriot extremism.

Well, as I’ve stated before, this is a new and apolitical War Department with all the right priorities. Under the leadership of President Trump, we’re upholding things that are central to the defense of our republic and our American way of life.

And we’re doing this because, in the past, voting for our men and women in uniform has been time-consuming and complex, as many warriors reside outside of their home state for obvious reasons. They face unnecessary, difficult ways of obtaining, completing, and returning absentee ballots while serving far from home.

Now, we’re not telling you who to vote for, but we will give you every opportunity to do so.

It’s then up to you to exercise your right as an American to choose your elected leaders. Voting is the way our Founding Fathers envisioned every citizen’s ability to participate in government. We’re going to take the time to ensure that you can vote and that your voice is heard.

You are the best citizens of our country, and therefore, you should have every opportunity to exercise your right to vote. So, take that day to fill out your absentee ballot, help your family members do the same, or go to the polling place yourself and exercise your right to vote.

It’s about time we prioritize that in this department, and we’re fixing it right here, right now.”

This latest directive follows Hegseth’s broader effort to increase voting participation among America’s men and women in uniform.

As The Gateway Pundit previously reported on September 26, Hegseth urged service members, spouses and eligible family members to register ahead of the midterms after saying roughly 300,000 American service members were not registered to vote in 2024.

At the time, Hegseth directed troops to FVAP.gov and reminded commanders that encouraging registration does not mean telling troops which candidates to support.

“You’re not telling them who to vote for; you’re just telling them to vote,” Hegseth said.

The Gateway Pundit also reported this week that Hegseth issued a separate directive ordering U.S. Cyber Command and Defense intelligence agencies to prioritize efforts against foreign interference targeting the 2026 elections.

The November 3 election is now just weeks away, and Hegseth’s order ensures troops stationed across the United States and around the world have dedicated time to navigate registration and absentee-ballot requirements before Election Day.
