HBO Max Boss Explains Long Delay for DCU TV Shows That Were Announced 3+ Years Ago

The CEO of HBO has pulled back the curtains on why some DCU shows for HBO Max never made it to the screen. The statement comes just a day after HBO shows dominated at this year’s Emmy Awards.

Deadline recently asked Casey Bloys, the Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, about the DCU shows that were previously in development and were cancelled.

In response, Bloys stated, “You know what I would say about that? It’s the same thing with Game of Thrones. People read about development, and they assume that those are greenlit shows, and they’re development.”

The HBO head added, “And everybody knows that development is just that — you’re trying things, you take big swings, not everything comes through. I would say our track record in DC, from Watchmen to Peacemaker to Penguin and now Lanterns, is pretty good. We’re very selective. We’re careful about what we do, nothing has changed. You’ll read about development, but focus on what we’re greenlighting.”

What DCU TV shows are currently in active development at HBO Max?

When Deadline asked Bloys if any new shows are currently in development at HBO Max, he confirmed, “No, not right now.”

The HBO CEO added, “Obviously you’ve got Gorilla Grodd, which I’m very happy about, doing something different, and I think it’s a really fun idea. They just started shooting.”

Filming for The People v. Gorilla Grodd began in early September in Atlanta, Georgia. It is an upcoming mockumentary series set in the DCU that stars Skyler Gisondo, who reprises his Superman role of Jimmy Olsen. HBO Max has not announced an official release window yet.

Bloys’ remarks come after several HBO shows earned multiple Emmy nominations this year. The Pitt won Outstanding Drama Series once again, while Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series went to DTF St. Louis.

Other HBO shows that received Emmy nominations include Hacks, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and The Gilded Age.
