Can college football head coaches find friends in fellow head coaches? If you’ve played together in the NFL, it turns out you can. That’s exactly the case for DeSean Jackson, who will begin his first stint as a CFB HC at Delaware State. But before he embarks on this journey, he’s making sure to commemorate a dear friend, who also served as an inspiration for Jackson. It’s a new era for these guys, and it’s always a good thing to look back at those glorious days of the past.

DeSean Jackson is hands down one of the best WRs in modern NFL. Along with that, he brought some lethal power as a punt specialist as well. 11,726 all-purpose yards, 62 TDS (passing and rushing), 1,315 punt return yards, and 16 fumbles: all these imposing career totals give a clear picture of the sheer power he displayed during his time in the league. He played 6 seasons with Philadelphia, and found a close friend in its formerly elite QB, Michael Vick. Now, the Norfolk State Spartans’ HC, Vick, and Jackson developed a close bond in the former’s second innings in the NFL, which paid off greatly.

DeSean Jackson is making sure Vick knows how special their friendship is to him. At a recent event, the Hornets’ HC met up with Vick and NBA legend Allen Iverson. Jackson shared a picture of the three of them on his Instagram and wrote about the special moment. “When u think about Athletes that did it they’re way think about US!! We changed the game 4ever!! I looked up to the big homies & got a chance to play with my favorite QB!! I shaped my game after these two & Kobe Bryant 🙏🏾.”

Vick and Jackson played together for the Eagles from 2009 to 2013. But Vick ultimately retired in 2017, while Jackson continued until 2022. Now at Norfolk State, the former QB is set to begin a new chapter in life. He also shares a special link with Iverson, because of them both hailing from Newport News. The basketball icon was also a spectacular football player, but ultimately decided to switch to basketball. He also headed over to Norfolk to attend the program’s first spring game under Vick’s tenure.

Both Jackson and Vick will lead two HBCU programs struggling to make a mark in CFB. Both recorded poor finishes of 1-11 and 4-8, respectively, but now have two great former players to turn things around. But could the competitive season put their friendship to the test?

DeSean Jackson keen on playing Michael Vick’s Spartans

DeSean Jackson and Michael Vick proved to be a damage-inducing pair during their time at Philadelphia. In a memorable game against the Giants in 2010, Vick threw 2 TDs and rushed another one to bump up the Eagles’ score and tie it to 31-31. Jackson pitched in too and returned a 65-yard punt right in time to save the day for the Eagles. The Philadelphia offense, under Andy Reid, would smoke defenses left and right during those days.

Jackson, however, wants to add a new twist to their longstanding friendship. The new DSU coach seems to be keen on facing off against the Spartans this season. “We’re trying any and everything to get that game at Lincoln Financial Stadium. It’s a possibility for sure,” Jackson told the press earlier in the year. He’ll only see part of that wish coming true this season. A DSU vs Norfolk State game is scheduled for November 1, but it will be a home game for the Hornets HC.

When HBCU programs make a splash, the whole football community takes note of it. That will be the expectation for DeSean Jackson and Michael Vick, as they take charge of their teams. Will their decade-long friendship stand the test of their matchup this season?
