A Canadian is set to lead the Atlanta Hawks.
Edmonton’s Onsi Saleh was promoted to general manager after the team fired Landry Fields, the team announced on Monday.
Saleh joined the Hawks as an assistant GM in May 2024 after three seasons with the Golden State Warriors and five with the San Antonio Spurs.
He graduated from the University of Alberta with degrees in biological sciences and history before obtaining his law degree at Tulane University in Louisiana.
Saleh takes over a Hawks team that finished eighth in the Eastern Conference with a 40-42 record. They fell to the Orlando Magic in the first game of the Play-In Tournament, then failed to advance to the playoffs after a 123-114 overtime loss against the 10th-seeded Miami Heat.
“Adding an accomplished, senior-level leader to provide strategic direction and structure as well as partnering with Onsi and our talented front office is a top priority,” principal owner Tony Ressler said in a statement.
Fields joined the Hawks as assistant GM in 2020 and was promoted to the top role two years later.
The 36-year-old spent five seasons as a player in the NBA from 2010 to 2015, including three with the Toronto Raptors.
“I would genuinely like to thank Landry for his leadership during his time with us. Landry made our franchise better and left contributions that have positioned us for growth. I am grateful for his dedication and wish him success in his next endeavour,” Ressler said.
