Harvey Weinstein Sentenced to 15 More Years in Prison for 2006 Sexual Assault Case

Former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for past sexual assault crimes. The new verdict came on Wednesday following an overturned conviction and two subsequent mistrials. Weinstein was convicted of sexually assaulting former production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006.

Variety reported on the new sentencing, following his 2022 California conviction and his separate New York conviction involving Haley, which was overturned in 2024 and later retried. Weinstein is also expected to face resentencing in California for his conviction for raping and sexually assaulting Italian model and actor Evgeniya Chernyshova in 2013. The state of California has yet to decide whether Weinstein’s resentencing will run concurrently.

Weinstein’s latest sentencing has nearly guaranteed that the former producer and sex offender will spend the rest of his life in prison. “It has often felt like I was the one on trial,” said Haley. “This process has been the worst decision of my life, for me personally. I considered pulling out so many times.”

Weinstein’s actions and the subsequent reporting around them prompted the initial wave of the #MeToo movement. During the recently concluded trial, Weinstein was serving his 16-year California sentence. Before sentencing, Weinstein’s defense cited his health problems while asking the judge for a nine-year sentence. Weinstein, 74, has faced various health issues in recent years.

Despite multiple retrials and convictions, Weinstein “hasn’t shown an ounce of remorse,” as said by New York assistant district attorney Nicole Blumberg. The DA asked Judge Curtis Farber for a 20-year sentence in her closing statement. In an interview earlier this year, Weinstein compared his crimes favorably to Jeffrey Epstein’s. “You took what you wanted by force and you have never accepted responsibility,” Farber said.

“I live with many regrets and sincerely apologize for my actions,” Weinstein said in his statement.
