She stressed that even though they differ on transgender rights, she still values the personal bond they once shared. More than a decade after the franchise ended, Watson reflected on Rowling’s recent comments and her own approach to navigating painful disagreements.

In an interview on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, Emma Watson addressed her ongoing rift with J.K. Rowling, who has publicly criticized her and co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint for supporting trans rights. Rowling recently declared she would never forgive the actors and claimed their stance had “ruined” the films for her.

Despite those remarks, Watson emphasized that her personal history with Rowling remains important. “I really don’t believe that by having had that experience, and holding the love and support and views that I have, means that I can’t and don’t treasure Jo and the person that I had personal experiences with,” she explained. “I will never believe that one negates the other.”

She added that her deepest wish is to continue loving people even when they hold opposing views. “It’s not so much what we say or what we believe, but very often how we say it,” Watson said. “That’s really important and that’s really frustrating and not what you want to hear when you’re really angry and upset with someone.”

Watson, who was only 11 when she first played Hermione Granger, admitted the Harry Potter experience shaped her expectations of the film industry. Spending 12 years with the same group created a sense of community she hoped to replicate in Hollywood. However, she confessed the reality outside Hogwarts was far harsher. “I came to work looking for friendship, and that was a very painful experience for me outside of Harry Potter,” she said. “It broke me.”

Though Watson has not appeared in a film for six years, she hasn’t closed the door on returning. “I’ll always be an actor. I’m still open to doing it again,” she said.
