Earlier this year, Microsoft confirmed it would be releasing a Nintendo Switch 2 rival, in collaboration with Taiwanese manufacturer ASUS. The Xbox ROG Ally will include several “new and first-of-their kind features  – from an immersive Xbox full screen experience, an aggregated gaming library with access to installed games from leading PC storefronts, and more.”

Two versions of the handheld console will be available at launch next month (October 16). The ROG Xbox Ally is described as “the essential handheld at a great value for everyone from the casual player to the avid enthusiast” while the ROG Xbox Ally X will be “the ultimate high-performance handheld, built for the most demanding players.”

Microsoft has now confirmed how much it will be charging for the handheld Xbox. The Xbox ROG Ally will cost £499.99/$599.99 and the more powerful Xbox ROG Ally X will set you back £799.99/$999.99.

“Compared to the Switch and the Steam Deck, these prices are fucking stupid,” one fan wrote on Reddit with another pointing out you can buy both consoles for the same price as the Xbox ROG Ally X. “Seriously, all these prices from the competition are making the Switch 2 look like a steal,” added another. “So they really don’t want to sell this thing, huh,” wrote a third.

Pre-orders for the consoles went live overnight and, despite backlash over the price, have already begun selling out.

The hype is real! ROG Xbox Ally X preorders are sold out on the Xbox Store worldwide.

“Everything at Xbox starts with the player,” said a statement from Microsoft about the handheld Xbox. “That’s why we’ve dedicated years to reimagining how to make it easier to enjoy the games you love—wherever you are. Whether you’re at home or on the go, your favourite games should follow you.”

The company has also revealed the very first details about the successor to the Xbox Switch X/S, which is rumoured to launch in 2027.

In other news, a special concert celebrating the soundtrack of Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been confirmed to take place in London later this year.
