The question “Will he play or will he not?” regarding the great Tiger Woods has received nothing but endless speculation, especially in the last few months. However, aside from the April Fools “promise of playing at Augusta” that we got from the legendary golfer, Woods hasn’t given any indication that he will return to the course anytime soon. Amidst the gloom and uncertainty regarding that particular question and Woods’s injury, Miller Brady, the president of the PGA Tour Champions, has a rare update for the fans. And now we have a new question to tackle: will Tiger Woods play in the PGA Tour at all?
The answer to his lack of play and upcoming course plans may become clearer considering Tiger Woods’ recent Achilles tendon surgery and upcoming 50th birthday on December 30, 2025. Consequently, once he turns 50 on December 30, 2025, he will be able to compete in tournaments on the circuit from 2026 onwards.
Talking about the possibility of the G.O.A.T. joining the senior circuit on Golf Channel, Brady replied that he doesn’t “really know what Tiger is going to do when he turns 50, and I don’t think Tiger knows what Tiger is gonna do when he turns 50.” Despite a lack of a certain answer, Brady shared that his team has been in contact with Woods anyway. “What I do know is that our team has met many times to prepare for when he does come out and play. Our players have had conversations with him. We know that Tiger is a competitor. He likes to play golf. So, our hope is that he comes out and plays, and when we know that, when he does, he’s going to have a great time hanging out with old friends.”
Among the senior golfers who expressed excitement about the possibility was Rocco Mediate. In a 2024 interview, Mediate said, “I can’t wait.” One of their most iconic battles was the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. Mediate, however, acknowledged that it also depends on Woods’s health: if he can maintain his health, he will surely play more on the Tour. “If he can’t, he can ride around in a cart out here, which he’ll do because it’s OK out here,” an excited Mediate added.
Other golfers who are enthusiastic about this idea include Bernhard Langer and Paul Azinger, among others. However, no one is as excited as Jack Nicklaus, who believes Tiger Woods will dominate the senior circuit when he joins the PGA Tour Champions!
Jack Nicklaus believes Tiger Woods will dominate the senior circuit
After opening the Masters this season, Jack Nicklaus, alongside fellow legendary golfers such as Gary Player and Tom Watson, said, “I think Tiger will get well and Tiger will be back and play. I believe he’ll probably play the senior tour and I believe he’ll probably dominate the senior tour.” As stated above, six years after winning his last major tournament at Augusta in 2019, Tiger Woods is out of action due to a torn Achilles tendon. The 15-time major winner has had to play less in recent years because of injuries and hasn’t competed on the PGA Tour since July of last year.
Given his injury, it is likely that he will miss the rest of the PGA Tour stops this year. However, Nicklaus believes that Tiger Woods’s love for competition will keep him in the sport for much longer, despite the ongoing discussions about his form. At Augusta National, he continued, “Tiger is too much of a competitor to not play. I don’t believe he will not play.” That goes without saying. Keep in mind he is the second golfer with the biggest major wins in his hands after Nicklaus. “I believe he will play. I don’t think Tiger will play for money. He doesn’t need money. Tiger will play for competition. He loves competition, and he’s very good at it, obviously.”
If Tiger Woods acts on this particular speculation, Nicklaus’s records will likely remain secure, as Woods is no longer consistently competitive in major tournaments.
