Gutted Evelyn delivers bad news in Coronation Street after making sad decision

Evelyn Plummer (Dame Maureen Lipman) recently made her return to Coronation Street after a break of a few months, and her return came at a critical moment for Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) and his family. 

Shockingly, Tyrone was knocked down in a hit and run accident, leaving the beloved character with a spinal cord injury and facing an uncertain future. He underwent surgery, but was told that although it was a success, he was facing a very long recovery period. 

‘Initially, there is a concern that he might not get up at all,’ Alan Halsall reflected. ‘There’s real fear there, and not just fear from Tyrone but fear from Fiz and the kids and his mum and gran. 

‘They don’t know if he’ll walk again or how life is going to look going forward. But he knows they will all try to stick together and face what the future holds. there’s just this fear and trepidation of what this is going to bring and how his life is going to look after this accident. He will want to be strong for the family but that is going to be difficult.’

He opens up to his gran, Evelyn, about his fears about not being able to look after his family, and the pressure that will inevitably pile on Fiz (Jennie McAlpine). Evelyn tells him that she can hold the fort while Fiz returns to work. 

Since Evelyn last appeared regularly on the show, the character has embarked on a law degree at university and appeared to be absolutely relishing her new life and the chance to put her intelligence to good use.  

But in upcoming episodes she tells Fiz she’s made the decision to give up her studies. She cites the expense and says it’s a young person’s game. But it’s more likely that she’s decided to put her own interests to one side as she focuses on being there for her son and his family.

The university storyline has meant that Maureen can take breaks away from Coronation Street, with the actress announcing her character would be ‘in and out’ of the show so she could have ‘a bit of a life.’  

She last appeared on the cobbles in March, but Claire Sweeney recently hinted that Maureen would  soon return, saying her co-star would be ‘Dipping in and out now. Whenever she goes, we had a few drinks with her the other day and we were like: “You’ll be back, we’ll see you soon.”’ 

It’s likely that her current stint in the show will be fairly brief – so will we see Evelyn returning to university after all?
