Green Lantern director Martin Campbell said “the movie could have been great” if one key aspect of its pre-production had been different. The superhero feature came out in 2011 and was a critical and commercial failure.
It currently holds a 25% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes after 248 reviews. It features Ryan Reynolds in the eponymous role. The cast members also include Blake Lively as Carol Ferris, Peter Sarsgaard as Hector Hammond, Angela Bassett as Amanda Waller, and Mark Strong as Thaal Sinestro.
Martin Campbell says Green Lantern ‘would’ve been great’ if Ryan Reynolds wrote it
Martin Campbell reflected on Ryan Reynolds’ criticism of Green Lantern during an interview with The Direct and stated that it would have been better if Reynolds himself had penned the script. “In fact, I wish to God he had written the script, and it would have been great. But he’s always taking jabs at it,” Campbell hypothesized. “And fair enough. Though, listen, it was a big success for him because he met Blake Lively.”
The filmmaker was referring to the fact that Reynolds and Lively met on the set of the movie. They are now married and have four children together.
Greg Berlanti, Michael Green, Marc Guggenheim, and Michael Goldenberg wrote the script of Green Lantern from a story by Berlanti, Green, and Guggenheim.
Earlier in the interview, Campbell accepted that he had to “take the heat” for the movie’s failure, as he was its director. He further shared, “All I can say is, Ryan’s a very funny guy, very fun. We actually had a terrific time on the film. I thoroughly enjoyed working with him and with Blake Lively. She was terrific as well. And he’s always, he’s got a great whip, you know, Ryan.”
In 2021, Reynolds revealed in a post on X (formerly, Twitter) that he hadn’t watched Green Lantern and would do so then. He later noted that “hundreds of incredible crew and cast members did amazing work” on the movie. The actor added that even though Green Lantern wasn’t “perfect,” it wasn’t a “tragedy” either.
Campbell is widely known for helming James Bond features GoldenEye (1995) and Casino Royale (2006). He also directed The Mask of Zorro (1998), Vertical Limit (2000), Beyond Borders (2003), and The Legend of Zorro (2005).
