Lego is getting ready for Black Friday by unveiling a new set that will be the first ever based on everybody’s favourite giant monster.

For a 72-year-old movie star, Godzilla has never been more popular. Between the Western-made Monsterverse movies and TV series and Japan’s Godzilla Minus One, and its new sequel, the Big G is everywhere at the moment, and that has clearly not escaped the attention of Lego.

This gigantic new set is based on the original Monsterverse design and stands over 70cm tall. It’s made up of exactly 5,363 Lego pieces and is the biggest Lego Ideas set ever.

Lego Ideas designs start with fan creations, that are then submitted to a website for everyone to vote on. The most popular ones are then judged by Lego and a select few are turned into actual retail products, that the original creator gets a small cut of the profits from.

Godzilla’s design is highly posable, with moveable shoulders, elbows, wrists and fingers. You’ve also got the giant dorsal fins on the back, which is not an easy detail to get right with Lego, and a detachable heat ray to simulate Godzilla’s famous atomic breath.

The original model was created by fan Matthew Esposito, from New York, and, understandably, he’s over the moon about his design being picked for release.

‘Building Lego Godzilla was a real passion project. I’ve loved both Lego building and Godzilla for years, so I wanted to capture his shape, scale and character as accurately as I could. The head was definitely the biggest challenge, but seeing the model come together and eventually reach 10,000 supporters after more than two years was incredible. I’m so grateful to everyone who supported the project and helped make this dream a reality.’

The Godzilla set (#21375) will be available from November 27 at Lego stores and the Lego website. Since it’s such a big set it doesn’t come cheap, with a price tag of £349.99, but it’s definitely aimed at adult collectors and is positioned much more as a Christmas gift than an impulse purchase.

You’ll notice that’s the same day as Black Friday, which is not a coincidence as Lego always has a big new set out on that day. But November is also when fans celebrate Godzilla Day (the original film came out in Japan on November 3, 1954) and when new movie Godzilla Minus Zero comes out (it arrives in the UK on November 6).

Also, anyone that buys the set between November 27 and 30 will also get an exclusive gift with purchase set, that isn’t available any other way.

The unambiguously named Godzilla Logo & Footprint set features the Godzilla logo, a giant footprint, and a miniature cityscape, complete with a reference to a certain moth-like kaiju. The footprint matches up exactly with the main set, so it’s a neat incentive to try and get it early.
