The More You Know: Brook Lynn’s (Amanda Setton) troubles deepened when she found out Lulu (Alexa Havins) knows she gave birth to Dante’s child.
On General Hospital, Brook Lynn’s efforts to start a family with her loving husband, Harrison Chase, have been plagued by one setback after another, and have brought back painful memories of the baby she secretly gave up for adoption after getting pregnant by a still none-the-wiser Dante Falconeri when she was a teenager. Now, even as Brook Lynn remains clueless to the fact that the baby boy in question grew up to be her housemate, Gio Palmieri, she’s in quite the quandary — while she told Chase about her past pregnancy, she didn’t reveal that Dante was her child’s father, and now Dante’s ex-wife, Lulu Spencer, has stumbled onto the truth. Soap Opera Digest checked in with Brook Lynn’s portrayer, Amanda Setton, about the latest wrinkles in the complicated yarn.
Soap Opera Digest: How have you been enjoying having a new strong female for Brook Lynn to go up against in Alexa Havins’s Lulu?
Amanda Setton: Oh, my gosh, I love Alexa. We are having the best time together. She is such an incredible addition to the team, to the cast, to the canvas, to Port Charles, and honestly I couldn’t be happier to have her here. We are having so much fun as friends and as acting partners. She is a formidable opponent for Brook Lynn, and it’s been fun for me to see that sass back in Brook Lynn, which we haven’t seen in quite some time. She’s been in her love bubble and really focused on family and growing in her career at Deception. So, it’s been really fun for me to see this childish, sassy, resentful part of her come back up.
Digest: Brook Lynn barely got to finish sighing with relief after coming clean — to an extent — to Chase about the baby before finding out that Lulu knows she gave birth to Dante’s child. What kind of impact does it have on Brook Lynn that Lulu is in possession of this information?
Setton: Well, I have to say that those scenes with Alexa were the most gratifying scenes I’ve maybe ever had in my career. Each scene took Brook Lynn through such a journey — she was afraid, frightened, defensive, angry, sad. I mean, there were just so many emotions at play that I hope the viewers were able to tap into because it wasn’t just one thing — it wasn’t just anger that she knew, it was also this intense fear of it blowing up her whole life, and her whole house of cards just plummeting without her having control over it, especially knowing how much Lulu despises Brook Lynn. And that was another piece of it — it’s not like she’s talking to a close friend who she could be vulnerable with! For Brook Lynn to be so vulnerable in front of this enemy was really, really tough.
Digest: Their confrontation ends with Lulu agreeing not to tell Dante, but leaving Brook Lynn with some food for thought: “I’m not going to tell him, but you should.” Does that get under Brook Lynn’s skin?
Setton: I think it gets under her skin, but less with [regard to] Dante and more with her husband and her mother [Lois], you know? Realizing that the truth is out to Lulu, but her husband doesn’t even know, and her mother went and talked to this lawyer [Martin]! I think that really floors her and she’s just so focused on that. She hasn’t even thought about telling Dante. To her, telling Dante … It’s, like, not even possible.
Digest: We’re still at a point in the story where Brook Lynn does not know what Lois, Martin and the audience do: Gio is Brook Lynn and Dante’s son. What has it been like getting to work with and get to know Giovanni Mazza, who plays Gio?
Setton: Gio is such a doll. I absolutely love working with him. He is such a hard worker and he’s so eager to be of service as an actor in all of his scenes. And he’s just delicious! He’s so fun and he’s having a great time on the show and I’m having a great time with him.
Digest: The Brook Lynn and Chase fans are obviously very invested in the relationship between the two characters and are nervous about this secret possibly tearing them apart. But for you and Josh Swickard (Chase), is it exciting as actors to get to have something so juicy to play?
Setton: Oh, for sure. All the layers we can get just make for a better story. These writers are so incredible, and Frank [Valentini, executive producer] is such an amazing captain, and they thought about this story building and unfolding since Brook Lynn and Chase first got married really, and Gio was introduced onto the canvas. Josh and I are over the moon to have some juicy, layered stuff to play, and I think that we’re both so invested in Chase and Brook Lynn’s love story that we hope that they’ll be able to work through this. I do think that there will have to be that push and pull of questioning of, “Will they be able to make it through such a massive shakeup?” And one that involves so many characters. You know, time will tell. We’ll see just how strong their love is — or isn’t.
