Geri Halliwell-Horner has spoken out about the possibility of new music from Spice Girls, and questioned the “relevance” of Madonna’s latest material.

The former Spice Girl made the comments during a new interview for the Times Radio podcast Off Air with Jane and Fi. During the appearance, she was asked whether or not the iconic ‘90s girl group were thinking of reuniting and making new music.

While she didn’t explicitly shut down the hopes for a comeback, she did explain that the decision would come down to “relevance”, and whether all of the members thought it felt right to get back into the studio.

“If it felt relevant [then we would], but if not, either way is OK,” she explained, before going on to compare the idea of new material to Madonna’s more recent bodies of work

“I always come from a fan perspective,” she added “Let’s say Madonna, right? I’m a massive Madonna fan. I would say I want to hear ‘Holiday’ and ‘Into the Groove’, but I love ‘Ray of Light.’

“Have I connected to her latest stuff? No…But she has every right to do that as an artist. It’s the relevance. So if it felt relevant…”

Hopes of a Spice Girls reunion have been going around the rumour mill for years now, and got more momentum last spring when Halliwell-Horner, Emma Bunton, Melanie C, and Mel B were seen giving a surprise performance of their hit ‘Stop’ at Victoria Beckham’s 50th birthday party.

Around the same time, Mel B got fans talking when she said that the group would “definitely [be] doing something” for their 30th anniversary, and at the end of the year Emma Bunton fuelled hopes when she revisited their discography and shared a Christmas-inspired version of ‘2 Become 1’. Mel C has spoken about hopes of a Spice Girls reunion recently too, saying that she feels that “it’s time” for a comeback.

The group last had a reunion tour in 2019, but the line-up did not include Victoria Beckham. The last time they all performed together publicly was at the London Olympics closing ceremony in 2012.

In 2023, over 10 years after all five appeared on stage together, some fans were convinced that Spice Girls would perform in the Legends’ slot at Glastonbury after Mel B alluded to it on The Big Narstie Show. Mel C then shut the rumours down, saying it didn’t work logistically for the group.

The latest comments from Halliwell-Horner also come after she opened up about the possibility of a comeback in a Sunday Times interview, saying that “there will be something”.

“My hope is we come back together as a collective,” she told the outlet. “It’s more respectful to come as one.”

“We love each other. I love them, I care about them, we want the best for each other,” she continued. “We shared something so monumental. We’ve always believed in each other, had trust in each other, which is beautiful.”
