Gary Neville named named three signings Arsenal need to make in the summer transfer window after ending their season without a trophy.

Discounting Community Shields, Arsenal have not landed a major trophy since the FA Cup in 2020 and haven’t won the Premier League since 2004.

The Gunners narrowly missed out on the top-flight title to Manchester City in 2023 and 2024, with back-to-back runner-up finishes under Mikel Arteta, while they fell short to Liverpool this time around after a series of injuries.

Arsenal reached the Champions League semi-finals this term, looking to win the competition for the first time ever, but lost to PSG in the last four.

Football pundit and former Manchester United defender Neville has now fired some transfer advice to the Gunners as they look to get back on track.

It is thought that the north Londoners are already on the brink of signing defensive midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Spanish side Real Sociedad.

Neville believes Arsenal need three new signings – two forwards and a midfield player – in order to keep fighting for trophies at the highest level.

‘I’m glad that on Friday in his press conference [Arteta] said [they’d] gone backwards in the Premier League,’ Neville told Sky Sports.

‘They tickled our backs a little bit for the last month with the Champions League and it sort of took the heat off them a little bit in how bad they’ve been in the league, being 13, 14 points from Liverpool, 13, 14 points from where they were last season and the season before.

‘But they’ve left themselves woefully short up top, and they still haven’t got a player in midfield from deep who can receive the ball on the back foot, and [Martin] Zubimendi we think might come to Arsenal.

‘They’ve got to deal with that – [Thomas] Partey’s not great at that, Declan Rice was proven in the first leg against PSG that he’s not great at it, he’s better going forwards.

‘So those two key positions, they need two forwards and they need another midfield player.

‘But the forward part of it – they’ve signed one striker in seven seasons as a football club.

‘I’ve been arguing this all season, it’s ridiculous that they’ve left Mikel Arteta – or Mikel Arteta’s left himself – so short. They’ve spent £750m and signed one striker.’

Goals have been a problem for Arsenal this season, with the Gunners scoring less than third-placed Newcastle and fourth-placed City.

Arsenal have been linked to a number of strikers already ahead of the summer transfer window, including RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.

However, it emerged over the weekend that the Gunners ‘have reservations’ over signing the Slovenian ahead of United and Chelsea.

Meanwhile, it was recently reported that Arsenal have submitted a €75 million (£63.4m) bid to sign Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres.
