Galantis drops The Devil’s Tax Return: Volume 1, featuring six reimagined tracks, including a highlight: “When You Were Young” by The Killers.

Galantis, the dance music project led by Swedish producer and songwriter Christian Karlsson, returns today with The Devil’s Tax Return: Volume 1, released through Ninja Tune’s Counter Records. The six-track release reimagines songs that have left a lasting impression on Karlsson, reshaping familiar favorites through his distinctive sonic lens.

With Galantis’ signature upbeat dance-pop blend, he transforms José González’s “Stay Alive” and The Killers’ “When You Were Young” and delivers a vocally captivating, bubbly rendition of Drake’s “One Dance,” now titled “Do You Mind” on the EP.

Reflecting on his reimagining of The Killers’ “When You Were Young,” Galantis shared the track’s inspiration and his approach to bringing a fresh, bass-driven energy to the iconic indie anthem. “It’s wild to think it’s been 20 years since I first heard this tune. I’ve always been obsessed with this big arena melody and how The Killers lace that gritty Springsteen DNA into an indie masterpiece,” he said. “I wanted to celebrate this by looping my favorite parts while injecting it with a bit of garage-born bass and beat.”

Galantis’ approach to taking an established song and reinventing it as their own is different, with the creative risk of keeping the song tangible in its original form while bringing it new life and energy. He captures this sound throughout the EP, drawing on his extensive experience in the pop world under the Bloodshy moniker.

Alongside production partner Avant (Pontus Winnberg), Christian Karlsson co-wrote and produced Britney Spears’ GRAMMY Award-winning hit “Toxic,” which earned Best Dance Recording, as well as “Piece of Me” and “Radar.” He also produced work with Madonna and Katy Perry, and later co-founded the indie-dance trio, Miike Snow. By continuing to push and challenge the boundaries of music production, he is a powerhouse in the scene. Whether known for various musical aliases or simply as Galantis, he has been a major influence in the music world for years past and to come.
