Futurama Season 15 Gets Encouraging Update Despite No Renewal as Show’s Ending Releases

Futurama wrapped its Season 14 with the finale airing on Hulu today, and the series was not renewed for Season 15. However, the series creator, Matt Groening, remains confident about its future and teases that the door is not fully closed.

Speaking to Variety following the Season 14 finale, Groening reflected on the show’s uncertain status. “They can put us in a coffin. They can nail the lid shut, but they can’t bury us. We will rise again,” the 72-year-old said.

The creator later noted that they had similar incidents like this before and still managed to return again. “We’ve been in this situation many times before. We have lots more stories to tell,” he said. “You never know.”

Although there are no immediate plans for another full season, the long-running sitcom is not done yet after the Season 14 finale. Hulu is coming with three supersized specials, which they describe as “XXXL-Sized episodes,” now in production. They are set to launch in 2027, with the first being an Xmas-themed story featuring Robot Santa.

Futurama has a long history of coming back from the brink

The series originally premiered on Fox in 1999. Multiple seasons and episodes were broadcast before it came to a close for the first time in 2003. Five years after the first conclusion, Comedy Central revived it in 2008 and continued its run through 2013. During its five-year run, it released four seasons.

Hulu brought the series back a decade later in 2023 with Season 11. The series continued its broadcast until today with the Season 14 finale.

Exec producer David X. Cohen said that this finale marks the sixth time the show has written a potential series finale. He said the team is already working on a seventh while speaking on The Making Of podcast.

For now, Season 15 status remains unknown. The upcoming three specials will keep the franchise alive next year.
