Forgotten Island 2 Gets Strong Tease Despite Movie’s Weak Box Office Showing

Forgotten Island 2 might actually be happening. The director dropped strong hints despite the first film’s underwhelming box office run. The filmmaker says unanswered questions could pave the way for another story.

Forgotten Island opened domestically on September 25 and earned about $13 million during its opening weekend. Its worldwide total currently stands at roughly $20.8 million.

Januel Mercado addressed the sequel possibility in a recent interview. While speaking to The Direct, the director was asked whether an idea for Forgotten Island 2 was already waiting for a green light. Mercado said, “I will say because we’ve been kind of trying to live in the moment and stick the landing. However, the answer to your question is that there are many things in the movie, questions that remain unanswered, that provide a path to [a possible sequel].”

He also pointed to a larger world beyond the first movie’s story. Mercado explained, “There is a bigger world with the Forgotten Island, and these characters have histories and stories that have started long before the audience goes in the theater and even before Jo and Raissa get to the island, so they’re there.”

What is DreamWorks’ Forgotten Island movie about?

Forgotten Island follows best friends Jo and Raissa after a mysterious portal takes them to Nakali. The magical island is filled with creatures rooted in Filipino mythology. Their journey becomes more difficult when they discover that returning home could cost them their shared memories.

The animated adventure comes from DreamWorks Animation and is directed by Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado. H.E.R. voices Jo, while Liza Soberano voices Raissa. The cast also includes Dave Franco, Jenny Slate, Manny Jacinto, Lea Salonga, and Joy Koy.

DreamWorks has not officially greenlit Forgotten Island 2 yet. However, the film leaves its fantasy world open for future stories, while Mercado’s comments confirm that unanswered ideas remain available for exploration.
