Sweet Relief: Alex (Robert Scott Wilson) and Stephanie (Abigail Klein) learned Joy wasn’t pregnant.
Minutes after Alex and Stephanie’s happy reconciliation on Days of Our Lives, the pair has been confronted with a major obstacle: Alex’s ex, Joy, is having his baby. Although Joy lied to the couple and told them her pregnancy test was negative, viewers know the truth. Abigail Klein (Stephanie) weighs in to Soap Opera Digest about the moment Stephanie learned Joy might be carrying Alex’s child and what it all means for her future with Alex.
Soap Opera Digest: Stephanie learned about Joy’s plight when she overheard that she’d taken a pregnancy test. Obviously, it wasn’t anything she ever wanted to hear.
Abigail Klein: Stephanie is still on a high from having that conversation with Alex over Valentine’s Day when they decided to date again, be together, and were the only ones for each other. So when she came out of the elevator and heard [that] Joy might be pregnant, it definitely made her stomach drop. Because if Joy is pregnant with Alex’s baby, it could change all of their lives.
Digest: Stephanie confronted Joy about her possible pregnancy head-on. Do you think she was justified?
Klein: When Stephanie and Joy started talking there was this element where she was trying to feel Joy out. She was trying to see, “Okay, am I going to say something? Is she going to say something maybe randomly?” So at first, she was really trying to tread lightly and keep the conversation light. They even talked about Stephanie and Alex getting back together and how they didn’t want things to be awkward between them. Stephanie was teetering on that edge of, “Oh, I know I shouldn’t say anything, but I have to pull this out.” She and Joy also agreed that they were going to be forthright with each other and friends, so Stephanie just couldn’t help herself.
Digest: Do you think there was a part of Stephanie that regretted being so forward?
Klein: Well, she did kind of backtrack and was like, “Oh my God. Technically, this is none of my business, but here we are. So however you want to handle it [moving forward], I will follow your lead. I’ve stuck my nose in this enough.” Stephanie was totally going to let Joy navigate this.
Digest: To the point where Stephanie was prepared to keep the news from Alex, if that was Joy’s wish?
Klein: Fortunately, Joy was like, “Can you catch him up to speed?” Knowing Stephanie, I don’t know if she could have held that in, and I feel like Alex would’ve eventually sensed that something was going on. But she did get the all-clear from Joy to tell Alex for her. To Stephanie, that was music to her ears. She was getting the green light, so she could fill him in.
Digest: What were your thoughts on Stephanie and Alex’s discussion on how they would handle the situation, if Joy was pregnant?
Klein: I liked that Stephanie and Alex were both very much, “We can be a team. Whatever happens, we can be a team on this.” They were both struggling between jumping to a conclusion and what is [the future with a baby] going to look like, while also balancing, “Hey, let’s just take this one moment at a time. Let’s just put one foot in front of the other and see what happens.”
Digest: Of course, Joy lies and tells Stephanie and Alex that her test came back negative. Do they suspect she could be lying or do they take her at her word, because she’s saying what they want to hear?
Klein: For Stephanie and Alex it’s full relief, so they take her at her word. And Stephanie also doesn’t want to jump to conclusions necessarily from the top. I think at first she was like, “Hey, maybe Joy could be pregnant, but is it even Alex’s baby?” Stephanie had a lot of questions in her mind, but knew it was a very private matter for Joy and kind of felt bad for interfering. So when Joy says that she’s not pregnant, it’s a massive exhale. Stephanie’s relieved for her and for Alex and maybe just for all of them. Stephanie can totally go down a rabbit hole of overthinking. She can catastrophize things. I’m sure she was thinking, “Oh my gosh. The three of us are going to have to raise this baby.” She was already jumping to that and worried about what that world would look like. So when she hears that Joy isn’t pregnant, it’s like, “Okay. All right. We can go back to our lives. It’s all good.”
