Alex Garland has one of the most fascinating careers of any creative working in Hollywood today, as he has occupied many different roles within the industry. Although Garland started as a novelist, he earned the recognition of Danny Boyle when the British director decided to adapt his novel The Island into a big-budget blockbuster starring Leonardo DiCaprio. While The Island ended up being a critical and financial dud, Garland provided scripts for some of Boyle’s best films, including Sunshine and 28 Days Later. Although Boyle’s career would take a different direction when he started taking on more prestigious films like Slumdog Millionaire and Steve Jobs, Garland proved to be a capable filmmaker in his own right, and has directed five features to date.
