Wicked is shaping up to be a massive hit — and it's also sparked a sweet romance between stars Ethan Slater and Ariana Grande off-screen. In a recent chat with GQ, published on Wednesday, October 30, the magazine noted that Slater, 32, turned a bit red when asked about falling for Grande, 31, during filming.
“That's a really sweet question,” Slater responded with a smile. “That's really nice of you to ask. That's a really sweet question.”
Word got out in July 2023 that Slater and Grande had started dating after they both ended their previous relationships with Lilly Jay and Dalton Gomez. The pair, who play Boq and Galinda/Glinda in the movie version of the Broadway smash Wicked, made it clear they hadn't cheated on their former partners, despite what some people thought.
“Obviously, it was a really super big year, and I think there was something that was really difficult about things in your private life being commented on and looked at by the public,” Slater shared with GQ. “There were a lot of big changes in private lives that were really happening, so it's really hard to see people who don't know anything about what's happening commenting on it and speculating, and then getting things wrong about the people you love. So just to address that part of it, that feels really hard.”
He added, “But, of course, it was an amazing year and a really beautiful thing, and I'm just really excited.”
Slater couldn't help but gush about Grande's take on the famous Good Witch of the North.
“I'm just really, really proud of Ari and the work she's done on this,” Slater said. “She's poured herself into it. I'm really proud that I got to be there for that part of it, and I'm really excited to be there for this next step of it when the world gets to see the amazing thing that she did.”
Slater also called Grande “one of the best comedians that's been in a movie” and described her performance as “genius.”
