Enes Kanter Freedom shook the basketball world earlier this month with an announcement that one had expected. He declared himself for the 2026 WNBA Draft. And now he made sure everyone knows that he is prepared for the league.
Sophie Cunningham’s controversial statement about transgender women seemingly pushed Kanter to take the call. Now, with the WNBA lacking clarity about the definition of women, Kanter further opened up about the issue on My View With Lara Trump.
“I believe you know that the parents need to stand up for their children. Because if I was a parent, I wouldn’t want my kid to be in the same locker room, same showers, or same bathroom with a biological male,” Enes Kanter Freedom said.
The former NBA hooper further added, “And I will, if my ever daughter came out and says, ‘Hey, I have a man, or I have a biological male taking a shower in the same locker room as us,’ I will just go crazy.”
For Enes Kanter Freedom, the ongoing debate “shouldn’t even be like a right or left issue. This just should be common sense. But I think America, more, we need more players like, more people like Sophie Cunningham to come out and stand for what they believe in.”
Last month, Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham spoke with ESPN about the growing debate around women’s sports. The discussion quickly drew attention. Cunningham revealed that some critics had accused her of hostility toward transgender people. However, she pushed back on that perception and rejected the claim.
The biggest problem with the WNBA right now is its lack of clarity. Cathy Engelbert and Co. have failed to define “women.” Moreover, Sophie Cunningham’s beliefs took a different turn a while ago.
The Dallas Wings and Indiana Fever matchup drew plenty of attention at the American Airlines Center. Paige Buckers and Cunningham shared the spotlight, while Cunningham’s stance on transgender athletes remained a major talking point.
Before tipoff, supporters gathered at the AAC plaza. Texas Values organized the event to back Cunningham. Meanwhile, others continued to challenge her position on transgender women and girls competing in female sports across the country. “We don’t want non-biological women incurring into their sports. They don’t belong there,” Cindi Castilla said.
Meanwhile, Danielle Buck with Patriot Mobile said, “We believe that women are women and men are men, and we love both, but that women should have their own spaces specifically for sport.”
At present, the WNBA does not have any transgender athletes taking the floor. However, Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White’s declaration has added a new layer in the league’s history. Right now, the league’s higher-ups might really need to find a definition for women.
