Another NBA season is inching closer to its culmination. Two teams have already booked their place in the Conference Finals. And the remaining two spots are merely days away from being occupied. But as we move closer to crowning this year’s champions, a harsh reality is starting to hit the hoop community. Soon, there will be no more NBA on TNT.

With the NBA’s new $76 billion media rights deal kicking in next season, Turner Sports will no longer have the rights to broadcast live games. That privilege will now be passed on to NBC Universal and Amazon, including the multiple channels under their umbrella. Well, this is truly the end of an era, as TNT began covering the league during the 1989-90 season.

Since then, multiple generations of fans have grown up seeing the TNT logo on the side of their screens during intense playoffs action and regular season games. And the legendary panel of Ernie Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith, and Charles Barkley’s entertainment filled analysis to top it all off. While Inside the NBA will continue to entertain the viewers next season and beyond, it will not be on TNT. The beloved show has been licensed out to ESPN, which means there will be a new logo in their opening credits starting next season.

Although everyone knew this was going to happen from the moment NBA inked its new deal, tonight’s Warriors vs Wolves clash really put things into perspective. With Stephen Curry and Co.’s season coming to a brutal end in just five games, fans realized that there are not many games left for TNT to air. Following the Conference Semis, the broadcasting duties will shift to ESPN, and TNT’s NBA ties will be over. And this realization left the viewers heartbroken.

Positive Michael Jordan news couldn’t change NBA World’s mood amid brutal TNT realization

As the Warriors season came to a close, the hoop community began wondering if this was NBA on TNT’s final time on air. Comments like “Damn NBA on TNT almost done” and “One game closer to no more NBA on TNT” began flooding in. One even questioned, “Is this the last NBA on TNT ever? Please say no.” Fortunately, tonight’s game was not the end of the journey. TNT has at least one more Conference Semis game left to air before they bid goodbye.

However, some fans have already begun missing the experience, “I’m gonna miss watching nba on TNT @NBAonTNT” One netizen even pointed out that even if it was not NBA on TNT’s last game, it was surely the last time Warriors would be on their broadcast. “This is the last time we will see Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Jimmy Butler, and Steve Kerr on the NBA on TNT.” He wrote.

With Steph, LeBron, and Durant done for the season, and TNT’s time with NBA soon to be over, we are truly heading into a new age. But one familiar face is making his return to turn back the clock. Yes, Michael Jordan will be part of NBC’s NBA coverage going forward. Per the network, the Bulls legend will join as a “special contributor.” While its not certain how often Jordan will be on air, fans will surely tune in when he shows up.

Even he is hyped about his new role, “I am so excited to see the NBA back on NBC. The NBA on NBC was a meaningful part of my career, and I’m excited about being a special contributor to the project. I’m looking forward to seeing you all when the NBA on NBC launches this October.” Although MJ’s comeback is a celebratory moment, it stings that it’s happening at the same time when NBA on TNT is coming to an end. Do you agree?
