Emmerdale’s Katie Hill confirms Sarah’s ending amid job loss fears

Sarah Sugden’s (Katie Hill) world turned upside down a few weeks ago in Emmerdale when she pushed Doctor Caitlin Todd (Caroline Harker) over during a confrontation.

It was a move to defend herself and gran Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins), but there was no way Sarah could’ve predicted what happened next.

Todd smacked her head on a table and then died seconds after. The horror dawned on Sarah – Dr Todd was dead because of her.

Usually with storylines like this, the character typically faces consequences for their actions in one way or another. Occasionally, this can mean prison – but star Katie Hill has confirmed that this won’t be the case for Sarah.

‘I think I was a bit speechless at first!’, the actress said, sharing how she reacted to the story.

‘I was like, “Right, okay…” And then I thought, “Does she go to prison?” And you [Sophie Roper, producer of the show] immediately said, “Don’t worry, you don’t go to prison.” And I was like, “Okay, and breathe, I’ve still got a job!” I was just honoured to be trusted with this storyline. It’s massive. This is the biggest storyline I’ve had and, like Sophie said, it’s transitioning Sarah from being this innocent, happy young mum with Jacob to then this massive moment in her life that will change her forever.

‘I was just so excited and grateful to have been given this storyline.’

Sophie added: ‘I think for us as well, these women, grandmother and granddaughter, the bond and the joyous relationship we’ve seen between these two characters, this is going to test it hugely, in terms of the secrets around Leyla, but then also this huge secret that locks them together in terms of what they’ve done to Dr Todd.

‘So, it’s two brilliant actors that are going to keep us entertained and on the edge of our seats for a fair while to come yet.’

Sophie went on to share that the ITV soap intends to explore in great detail how Sarah’s accidental killing of Doctor Todd will impact her.

‘We’ll look at that from a legal standpoint; we’ll also look at that from how she’ll view herself and how she struggles to confront that trauma and how she struggles to deal with that. It’s not a simple story of justice by any means, and it’s complicated, of course’, she revealed.

‘Many people might ask the justice that Todd deserved, and it opens up that debate as well, but that’s something we’ll look at and explore through the course of the story.

‘Ultimately, through soap, we will always try to find that; to find those consequences, those things that you might lose as a result of doing something ‘wrong’, as the soap gods would call it. But I think this story is one that is driven by truth and emotion.

Sophie added: ‘I think it’s grounded in family and life and everything that Sarah has to face. But absolutely, there will be some legal consequences to this as we go through that will take on lots of different twists and turns.

‘I think as you watch and you see the story unfold, we do skew expectations.

‘There will be unexpected developments in this story that hopefully keep it engaging and exciting as we go through.’
