Emilia Jones & Nick Robinson’s Divisive New Movie Hits Theaters Today

A brand-new romantic drama starring Emilia Jones and Nick Robinson is all set to hit theaters today, September 25, 2026. The movie, directed by Mac Eldridge, has critics sharing mixed opinions.

Charlie Harper, co-directed by Tom Dean, has received largely divisive reviews. At the time of writing this article, it has a 56% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 16 reviews. Jones and Robinson play the titular characters of Charlie and Harper. Joining them in the cast are Nick Cirillo and Jessica Blackmore.

Shade Studios critic Alfred Castaneda, however, said that although the movie’s plot revolves around a complicated romantic relationship, audiences will tend to forget it the moment they step out of the theater.

The Hollywood Reporter‘s Angie Han reviewed the film and noted that its complicated, flashy storytelling drew more attention than the plot itself. The review read, “The showy structure overwhelms the unshowy story. All the frantic time-jumping and self-important narrating leaves little room for Charlie and Harper to simply breathe.”

Brian Tallerico from RogerEbert.com wrote, “I’m not sure ‘Charlie Harper’ would have worked any better told traditionally, either in structure or in non-fluctuating aspect ratios.”

The AU Review‘s Peter Gray noted, “An impressive debut from Eldridge and Dean as filmmakers, Charlie Harper speaks to the beauty and emotional brutality of love.”

Matthew St. Clair of Cinematic Words of a Chaotic Gemini pointed out that the movie narrates the story by moving back and forth between different points in time, which made it confusing. He said, “Although the film falls into the familiar trap of films with non-linear narratives jumping too hasty from one point in time to another, said narrative structure is still an intriguing decision on the filmmakers’ part.”
