Elon Musk has admitted he “regrets” some of the accusations he levelled at Donald Trump last week.
The richest man in the world and the US president were, for the best of a year, inseparable – until their relationship fell apart in a very public fashion last week.
Musk, who once described himself as “First Buddy” to the president, even claimed Trump had appeared in files linked to the disgraced paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.
However, on Wednesday, Musk wrote on X: “I regret some of my posts about President Donald Trump last week. They went too far.”
He did not clarify which posts he was referring to.
Musk invested $291.5m in Trump’s presidential campaign last year and was rewarded with a brand new role: leading the informal advisory body DOGE (the department of government efficiency).
But the SpaceX boss left the position after just five months, claiming the job had always had a fixed term.
And, just over a week later, Musk openly began to attack the president.
The X CEO and tech tycoon attacked Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” which cuts taxes for the wealthy, warning it would increase the US deficit.
He also claimed Trump’s tariffs on foreign imports would “cause a recession in the second half of the year”.
And, on top of his bombshell Epstein claim, Musk also suggested he “supports” impeaching the president.
Meanwhile, Trump told ABC News Musk had “lost his mind”, and threatened to cancel the government’s contracts with the tech tycoon’s companies.
The president also claimed he had asked Musk, who had been working as the head to the department of government efficiency (DOGE) to leave the White House.
Trump suggested they had clashed after Musk pushed back over Trump’s plans to drop an electric car mandate which would jeopardise Tesla, one of his firms.
The White House also hit back, denying the claims. Trump’s press secretary Karoline Leavitt said it was an “unfortunate episode from Elon”.
And two days after making the shocking posts, Musk deleted some of his more inflammatory accusations – including his Epstein claims.
Trump is yet to respond to Musk’s apparent climbdown.
