Eddie Hearn Holds Canelo Alvarez Responsible for Ryan Garcia vs Devin Haney Fight in New York City Instead of Las Vegas

As per the latest updates, after Jaime Munguia, PBC wants Canelo Alvarez to face David Benavidez on Cinco de Mayo weekend. While Alvarez has yet to officially accept the fight against ‘Red Flag,’ it is believed that the Mexican boxer will return to Las Vegas in May. Meanwhile, yesterday, Oscar De La Hoya took to X and informed the boxing community that Ryan Garcia vs. Devin Haney, initially planned for Vegas, will take place in New York.

So, is there a connection between Garcia vs. Haney’s new venue and Alvarez’s expected return to ‘Sin City’ in May? Well, according to Eddie Hearn, there is. In his latest interview with FightHype, the 44-year-old explained how Canelo impacted Garcia vs. Haney.

Canelo Alvarez’s Cinco de Mayo plan impacts Ryan Garcia vs. Devin Haney

Eddie Hearn is happy that Ryan Garcia vs. Devin Haney has been shifted to New York. In his opinion, while Garcia is “a massive fighter,” Devin Haney is on his way to becoming “the future of boxing.” As a result, the Chairperson of Matchroom believes the bout will sell out in Brooklyn, New York. “Look, you talk about Brooklyn. I mean Brooklyn, New York, I think that’s a brilliant move, taking it to Brooklyn to the Barclay Center,” said Hearn.

We saw so many PBC fights there. Some of which worked. Some of which didn’t. But, it’s a fantastic arena. And New York is a huge catchment area for boxing,” added Eddie Hearn. However, as per Hearn’s statements, one of the main reasons Garcia vs. Haney will not be in ‘Sin City’ is because Canelo Alvarez will likely return to T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Cico de Mayo weekend.

And when you got Canelo Alvarez potentially fighting on May the 4th, two weeks later, why not go to another massive market for that fight? So, I think New York’s always dying out for big fights. That’s a massive fight, I expect it to sell out very quickly,” concluded Hearn confidently. Additionally, speaking about the outcome of Haney vs. Garcia, Eddie picked ‘The Dream’.

Eddie Hearn expects Haney to disappoint Garcia

According to Eddie Hearn, Ryan Garcia is a commendable opponent that Haney will face. In his opinion, Garcia has a “good style” to fight someone as skillful as Devin. As per Hearn, Ryan is “reactive, he can punch, and technically sound.” However, if Hearn has to pick one, he will go with ‘The Dream’. “I think Devin wins the fight. Devin’s so good in so many areas. I think at 140 [lbs], he is a different fighter. You saw that in the Regis Prograis fight,” said Hearn.
