EastEnders confirms heartbreak as crisis destroys Kat and Alfie’s wedding day

The path to true love never did run smooth but EastEnders legends Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) and Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) have given this phrase a whole new meaning.

The beloved TV power couple, whose on-and-off tale of romance has captivated the nation over the past two decades, have had more obstacles thrown their way than I’ve had hot dinners.

From secret affairs to family troubles, Kat and Alfie have seen it all and, despite attempting to move on with various significant others over the years, they always seem to find their way back to one another.

With Tommy’s (Sonny Kendall) issues with violence having escalated last year when he punched mum Kat, Alfie really stepped up to the plate and proved the supportive co-parent that Kat had always wanted him to be.

Through the worry and concern of getting Tommy the help he needed, the former flames fell in love all over again, reuniting in romantic scenes last November in front of a fireworks display.

Flashforward many months and they are perhaps stronger than ever and it seems they’re ready to commit to one another all over again as Alfie gets a brainwave that sets in motion a wedding.

Alfie dreams up a fake wedding photoshoot to advertise his and Kat’s new chauffeur service, confiding in Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) that he wants to ask Kat to marry him.

Linda leaves him with food for thought and, soon after, he gets down on one knee to pop the question. And Kat says yes!

However, if I were you I’d hold off on running out and buying a hat just yet because let’s just say that – in typical Walford fashion! – things don’t exactly go to plan.

Upcoming scenes will see Kat make a discovery on Alfie’s computer that leaves her positively reeling and, soon after, it’s the big wedding day – in which one thing after another leads to proceedings being derailed.

New pictures of the scenes in question see Kat looking spooked and concerned as she and Alfie have a showdown in the middle of the Square.

Will the bride-to-be say ‘I do’? Will Kat and Alfie make it down the aisle? Or is this one love story that, despite their best intentions, simply won’t have a happy ending?
